OK, this might be in the wrong place, but I don't know where to post this. So here goes.. I have a 1986 Ranger 4x4. The motor that is in it is a 91-94 3.0 4x4. I can get a good deal on a 2.9 motor and transmission out of a 1988 BII. My motor and trans are both shot, and don't have time or place to rebuild right now. My trans is automatic, and the 2.9 is standard. How hard would it be to swap motor and trans and convert my truck to a standard?

Engine management box (ECU/PCM) and perhaps the wiring for it if it's different between an 86 and an 88. My son went through something simular on his 95 Toyota 4runner (went from automatic to manual). To this day, he still has a few CEL codes that he cannot clear, due to the ECU/PCM being different between years; he went from a 95 drive train to a 90 (got it cheap), but the ECU/PCM harness was different, and he cheaped out on swapping that. It runs good; he just has stuck codes that he cannot clear due to the ECU/PCM differences. In order to clear it, he needs a 90 ECU/PCM, and the wiring harness between the two are different.

Not hard to do if you buy the whole vehicle. The engine wiring is different, won't plug into your dash because the plug is different, but if you take the engine, trans, computer, dash etc out of the BII it should all drop back into your truck just fine.
