Auto Hard to Shift

1998 Ranger with 2.5L and 4R44E. About 3 mos. ago the shaft inside the steering column broke and I replaced the entire column. The shaft had broke in half. Earlier this week it became difficult to shift from Park to Drive and Friday morning the bracket under the dash at the end of the column broke. I'm posting in the transmission section because I'm thing my root cause is in the cable or at the tranny end instead of up on the column. I searched and read alot last nite and this morning to no avail. I can get another $40 col from the local pic and pull put if my problem is at the trans I'd rathe deal with that. ALSO, it is difficult to move the arm on the side of the trans from neutral to Drive. Anyone else have a similar problem. Thanks in advance for any help.

My 4r44e is a bit stiff at the trans, but that is normal there is a spring wheel pressing on the gear paw.

follow your cable and see if it is melted on your exhaust, or kinked somewere.

Be shure its ajusted right, remove the cable from the trans, put the trans in neutral, put the shifter in the same, where the cable is mounted, slide out the white clip and move the cable bracket untill the cable and the ball line up, before locking the cable down make shure the shift lever is still in neutral.
