I just installed a new stereo in my 1991 ranger and it has no sound. all the fuctions work on the stereo and the wires are matched up right according to wiring diagrams i've found on the site. Would someone help me out:pissedoff:

Turn up volume knob? Turn off the mute button?

Some radios have a "Hot-in-Start" power pin, which mutes the radio while you're cranking up the engine. That power pin should no longer get 12V power AFTER your engine has started.

How do i tell if it has the Hot-in-start pin.

What radio? Brand? Model Number?.

Stock wiring plug in the truck. Was the wire connector hacked up. Did you have to splice the wires together?

Did the old radio work before. New radio "new" or "used". Maybe got a bad radio.

Did your truck come with "premium sound" you might need to bypass the amp?

We need more info.......

Yes, ^^^

Did you have a standard or premium sound system in your '91?

Standard system had amplifier in the Head unit, like what you may have installed now.
Premium system has a separate amplifier so wouldn't work with amplified head unit.
You can look here, I assume you did before: http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/radio_wiring_diagrams.shtml

And you can by pass the separate amplifier if needed

It could also be a grounded out speaker wire. If a bare piece of speaker wire is touching the chassis and hooked to the head units internal amp it will act exactly as you described.

I bought my truck in November and the guy sold it saying the radio never worked, the radio had an amplifier in the head unit but he wired it to the factory amplifier. I removed all of his wiring and hooked up the radio to the speakers using the wiring diagrams for the radio and it worked fine. It was a real shame for the previous owner too, it's a really nice sound system :D
