ATV/Quad guys...opinions needed....

This one started life as a farm quad. Then gave it to his grandson when he quit farming, grandkid wanted a race quad, sold it to the guy i got it from who basically ran a few trails and drug deer with it, then got a side by side.

Im tickled as shit with it. I was shocked how cheap shit is for these, i need springs for the front and a CV and im looking at under 200 bucks, even for good stuff. Plus it seems fairly easy to wrench on.

I had more fun riding it around the yard for an hour then i ever had on my 6x6.

A winch is for sure on the list. Kinda in the air about a plow, but i dont know if my old garden tractor will put up with to many more snows like the last one we had. 6-8 inches of heavy wet stuff, plus since im doing mine and both neighbors sidewalks/drives it had its ass handed to it.

The quad will plow snow way faster than any lawn mower. That is up to you though. i'd like to put one on my quad but mine is only 2wd so it may struggle. My mower has a plow and it worked pretty good. you may be able to make a bracket that you could switch plow from one to the other. searsparts.com has a lot of plow parts for a LOT cheaper than MTD and other brands. a bracket I needed for mine was $112 but only $28 on sears. same part number and everything.

I have a 78 MTD 860, 11hp horizontal briggs with a peerless 2337 4sp. It has some sort of plow brackets that were rigged by the previous owner to push a john deere plow. I put about 110lb of weight on the back and chain it, itll push pretty good as long as it dont lose grip, power is no problem with a 174:1 first :)

Im sure this quad would literally plow circles around it though. But i know what kind of abuse plowing can do, which is why im gonna think long and hard about it.

Its gonna come in real handy this fall though cutting firewood, theres quite a bit back in the woods i could drag out but the old farmall cub cant get back in that deep.

Congratulations on the newest toy :icon_thumby:

I really like the hondas cause they are shaft drive instead of belt on the polaris
Threadjack:
Just wondering about driveshafts on quads, basically for moderate terrain ? I would think it couldn't take serious abuse like jumping high and/or gunning the throttle(WOT) to race?

Knowing nothing about quads aren't race cars and desert trucks shaft drive?

Im guessing because when your ass deep in mud/water last thing you want is your belt slipping lol

Do not get a scrambler for trail riding. Lack of low range, and depending on year 2 stroke just not a good combo for putting around on trails and pushing snow.

Honda reliability cant be beat. But like ypur daily driven 70s ford are outdated. No front locker and depending on model some are fulltime 4wd. Which is not ideal but im sure would work. The electric shift models are known for issues.

I would think look at all 4wd models in your price range. Test ride them and make sure they feel comfortable to you.

Lol happens to the best of us.

BTW noa i DD a slightly less outdated 87 ranger. Its nice going from 8mpg on 93 to 22 or so on 87

Dont worry about the belt on that sportsman. Keep it in low unlesd you are going fast just like if you were out in the woods in a truck. And if you do need to replace a belt make sure you break it in properly.

Only belts ive ever had to replace were from my own abuse and miss use. Im at 2500 very hard miles on my belt driven utv with original belt

my quad is shaft driven and I haven had any issues with it. a lot nice than a chain or belt that can break or needs adjusting. I know mine isn't a 4wd but it goes through the mud and snow good and it will get up to speed fairly quick. I used to own a 660r raptor so I know what get up and go should feel like. talk about going faster than cars on the road quicker than you can say "I bet I can beat that car on the highway" lol. I've owned a lot of different quads and they all have ups and downs. just take care of it and you will be happy with it.
