Got the water pump back in and all the hoses hooked up and tried to start it. The ignition wouldn't work so I jumped across the solenoid and the started turned the engine over, got gas pressure 40 lbs, and spark to at least # 5 cylinder. The engine "coughs" so I think my timing may be off about 360 dgrs. Any other ideas would be welcome..It was exciting, no smoking wires :yahoo: and a good first effort.:icon_cheers: Would appreciate any suggestions about other trouble shooting!

1st attempt

I think the engine is firing at the top of the exhust cycle. So I need to take the distributor out and turn the engine over a full revolution (360dgrs) then replace the distributor when the engine is 10 dgrs prior to TDC to fire on cylinder 1. Maybe I am missing something:icon_confused:. Would that be 180 dgrs or 360? Oh well enjoy I sure am...!

pull the #1 plug and stick myour finger in the hole as you turn it over when you feel compression line the TDC mark on the damper to the pointer. Then you make the rotor point to the #1 tower on the distributor cap. It might take a couple times for you to get it right it needs to line up with the oil pump shaft also just click the starter until the rotor drops all the way down and check it again. You can tell how far the rotor spins when you pull it up slow until the gears no longer mesh then judge where it will end up at the #1 post on the cap.

Both 360deg and 180 deg are correct, lol,.... 360 at the crank, 180 at the cam...

But yes, sounds like a timing issue. Find TDC as mentioned, and try it again.

With video...

Well I got to thank every body here. The support has been great! Relooked at timing. I was on cylinder 8 and 10dgs after TDC instead of 10 dgrs before TDC. Reset timing and it fired up.:yahoo: Now I got to figure out why the solenoid doesn't work, and the expensive LED Lokar gear selector indicator doesn't work , Get AC hooked up and get it painted. Still a lot of work to go but a mile stone has been passed after 3 years! I really can't thank the folks here enough for thier wisdom. When I get some wisdom I hope to be able to pass it on also!:icon_thumby:
