Need 5.0L HO EFI motor...candidates are 86 Tbird, mid to late 80's lincoln towncars with drivers side TB inlet, and E and F series motors. I'm thinking of the Tbird motor, but is this an HO motor?? I've done research, and read, read, read. I've found what the 87+ motors are, but not the 86 bird's...I'm picking the motor up tomorrow morning, so please post up tonight:icon_thumby:

Tbirds were available with HO or lopo engines.
I don't think you could get a Town car with the hO, I could be wrong. Mine came out of a Licoln Mark VII LSC.

Trucks didn't have the HO.

If it is an HO engine, the plate on the intake will say "HO", not just "5.0 litre" or whatever the many different plates said.

It shouldn't matter much if you plan to swap the heads and cam.

The car ones should be roller lifters, though. You want that.

Thats what I thought, but after reading a thread, "Differences in 5.0 engines..." I understood that if it had aluminum valve covers, it was a dead giveaway for an HO motor:icon_confused: I know about the roller motors and thats what I am after...
Also, I forgot to mention that if I need to I have a painless EFI standalaone wiring harness complete with A9L, MAF, MAP, etc...
Also, also...does anyone know if the Explorer 5.0L aluminum oil pan will fit the TJ?? What about the oil cooler?? Not looking to dress the TJ up, but rather unload on parts I will never use on my FORD projects...

BTW Teddy, my lower hose ended up being an 89 mustang, the VII didn't work, and the ranger didn't work...

There may be a HO 5.0 at the yard here in town,I'll try to check tomm.

And no Im not telling you where the Hi pin 44 and 9" for $200 is.....:D

Not looking to swap heads and stuff around either, keeping the motor together for now, maybe in the near future when he gets more funds we will locate a good motor for a rebuild...

But why do you need that when you have a SET of 1 tons going under yours??
SVT

The 1 tons are for the 460 project.
I may put the 44 and 9 under the 85 instead of a 35 and replace the 8.8 thats under it now.
Text me tomm and remind me,I'll go at lunch to see if its still there.

What I've had to do on mine is look at the code on the ECM (I.E. A3M, A9L, etc.) and google it.

I even had to go as far as joining a mustang forum to see if mine was an H.O. or not.

Luckly, the block was an H.O. "compatible" block, as in the 2 spots in the spider hold down tray were already tapped to accept one.

I would start there. Those 3 little numbers/letters on a computer can tell you everything you need to know.

The 94-97 E & F series 5.0's are just a tad behind the HO in output. Same long block as the 93-95 HO, but backed by the same cam later used in the Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0's which had better heads than the HO. 86 'Bird will have the crappy E6SE heads and 150 HP rating. The trucks and vans went roller in 92, then got the cam upgrade in 94. All these will be roller blocks, no matter the cam.

I ended up grabbing a motor out of a 90 lincoln towncar, and the FEAD from the 86 Tbird, the motor has the E6 heads, but it has the Grey oil pan, meaning its a roller, correct?? The valve covers are steel, which is non HO...the firing order also tells me its non HO (154)...
SVT

90 is roller.

I think any 302 after 86? is a roller. I could be off.

But it should at least have those 2 steel plugs in the windage tray area for the spider hold down screws. Maybe even tapped already for you.

The oilpan has nothing to do with it, all 5.0's from 1980-on had the same dual sump pan the Stang's came with. (with one exception---the 1980 Granada/Monarch, these were the last front sump Ford/Merc cars) Valve cover material also isn't an indicator of what the engine is. The 93-95 Cobra 5.0 also had steel vavle covers as did the Explorer/Mountaineer 5.0. All the cars had roller cams after 1986, no matter the application.

Will the A9L computer run a 154 motor?? The ECU was not with the car when I got the motor, but don't have the ECU. I plan to use the painless standalone EFI harness which has the A9L computer...

Maybe. A9L is a very good and popular ECU. Maybe as long as the cam is the HO firing order, it should work?
