Out for a couple of quick errands and while driving between stops
there is this EXPLOSION inside the cab of my truck...

Or so it seemed to me...:scare:

when I opened my eyes it is to look AT (not through) my suddenly opaque windshield...

I stopped prretty damned fast... fortunatly I was next to an open wheat field
so there wasn't much to run into...

I get out look around, realize I am COVERED with broken glass...
hell the entire interior of my truck is covered in glass dust!

then I see the cause, a Wild turkey Hen... Stupid F'ing BIRD!!!:flipoff:

And I HAD a long trip schedueled for tomorrow....

allan,sorry to hear that,at least it wasn/t a dear w/a huge rack.

Sorry to here that, you ok? That sure would ruin a day, could get glass in eyes too, that would be bad. Got a backup ride?

Cook that bird. Should make a nice X-mas turkey.

At least it sounds like your okay and only the windshield is busted.

I don't think they made a more stupid bird. My dad greased two with the one ton pulling his triple axle with a trailer on it. They both caught the bumper and didnn't phase the truck, one got flung off to the left in an explosion of feathers, the other was directed underneith the truck where it had to contend with 5 axles and the dovetail on the trailer. We watched as they slowly walked out and then tried to fly at the last minute, all we could do was slow down. All we got was a very small dent in the metal trim around the grille, and no one knows if it was there before or not. It sounded terrible, and we were sure we would need at least a headlight if not more.

It was kind of funny, once we got to the tractor pull everyone that came after us was commenting on the shredded turkeys in the middle of the highway.

I had a chance to nail some turkeys the other day, 10 of the little buggers were running down the road, i slowed down and honked at them, then slammed on the gas and they went crazy.... The funny thing was i was on my way to go turkey hunting and them birds were the only ones i saw.....

Well this was a whole bunch of them, I only say them AFTER I hit one of the flock.

It appears that when the rest of the bunch turned this one was dumber
than the rest and turned into me instead of away, and because it turned
downwind it couldn't climb out of my path....

Nah it's at least half all bruised to chit.

Allan, glad you're relatively ok. Deer would've been way worse.

turkeys do cause a lot of damage though, a buddy hit one that was flying, he centered it in his grill, we had to replace the grill, headlight trim and some part that had to do with the rad support...cant remember what it is called...

i hit one once with a 94 gmc tractor . and the damned thing came though the windshield. nothing like driving a semi with a dieing bird flopping around in the cab with you.

AT least you weren't on a motorcyle. My neighbor magnetically attracts birds. He had a chicken tear off his fairing and a hawk almost broke his leg.

I hit a Robin on my bike a few years ago. The thing flew and hit me in the head. I was cruising about 75 MPH and let me tell you it smarted. Had to pull over and pick it's beak out of the side of my head. Thank God it wasn't a Turkey.

you don't have a lift do you allen? another thing they are good for is getting you above the roadkill:D.i had a vulture swoop down into my windsheid in a kamakaze run one time and it hit right in front of my face!scared the hell out of me but it diden't hurt the truck at all.just another incedent proving how tuff those little 70's datsuns really are.

Yum, turkey burger with feathers and broken glass... Dude I was doing just under 70mph at the time!

Yeah, the windshield and the outside moulding are all I'm out.
but it comes at a financially bad time...

If I'd hit a deer there'd have been SOME useable meat on it

And truth be told, I'm "armored" against deer, I've hit FOURTEEN DEER in my life and IIRC it's eight or nine with this truck.

And one or two were nearly intentional, I could have avoided them but made a concious decision not to.
(basically deciding that the US209 any sex deer hunting zone season was "open")

The worst that has happened in any of those impacts is a broken
plastic grille ($25 at the Junkyard and I keep spares onhand)
and busted lights (the worst got one headlight and all four aux lights)

And since then I've added a front tow bar bracket which is mounted under the truck like a receiver hitch or snowplow frame and it's WELDED to the push bar....

My truck has never been "crippled" like this by an impact in all the time I've owned it.

Shit even the Deer that T-boned me and ripped the swing away
mirror off the passenger door cost me a grand total of $35 to
repair (for a complete junkyard door).

I am not afraid to admit I keep a razor sharp knife that has only ever touched deer in my truck along with a sealed roll of paper towels, Nitrile gloves and a couple of jumbo ziploc bags for and "road kill stew" ingredient collection....

Jeff Foxworthy says you can make fun of rednecks if you are one, well I are one. :)

Or atleast the Northern Grizzly Hillbilly subspecies.

Though in conversation about (or with) a Northern Grizzly Hillbillys
it is wise to refer to them as Hillbilly not "Redneck" some take offense....

Every once in awhile those deer will try the same attack as the turkey did by jumping at the last minute though. It ain't good when they come thru the windshield, and that is a major factor why I didn't get another car.
