Are the newer automatic transmissions any better than the older ones?

Hi all. Looking at purchasing a 2001-up Ranger. I've been reading about some of the earlier Rangers and some of their auto trans problems. Doesn't seem to be an epidemic or anything but enough to concern me. If I understand correctly, I know all of them from 2001-up and maybe even older basically have the same trans. My question is, has anything changed in the newer trucks, say 2007-08 or so and up, to make them more reliable?
