I'm thinking about putting a roller cam, roller lifters in my 97 ranger 4.0 when I put the Tom Marano stage three heads that I bought but I was told that the 4.0 is not a good canidate for roller lifters due to design and not getting enough oil to them...Can any body shed some light on this theory? Or would it be a good idea any way? Thanks for any input:icon_confused:

Its a great motor to put roller lifters in.... at least Ford thought so!:D

There are a couple different cams from Competition Cams available if you're wanting to do something worthwhile.

I recommend the 422. I ran that in my old Explorer for a while. You won't notice a loss of low end torque, and it helps a lot on the top end. Plus, you can keep your lifters! :icon_thumby:

Hey thanks guy's. I feel like a idiot. I haven't taken one apart before and I didn't know it already had it...So you said you ran a 422 in your Explorer? I had a guy tell me to run a 410 with 24 injectors. So I guess I have some decisions to make. Thanks again guy's:yahoo:

Don't go changing around your injectors. If you put higher flowing ones in, it will run rich under open loop, unless you make other changes. At most, I would go only one size larger, and only if you're putting in higher flowing heads, headers, bigger cam, etc.

I ran E85 in that Explorer that I had the 422 cam in. It also had ported heads, 11:1 compression, and headers. I ran 26lbs/hr injectors and it ran great. According to my calculations when I put it together, 26lbs/hr on E85 is roughly equivalent to 19lbs/hr on gasoline. The stock flow rate is 19lbs/hr. At most, if you're sticking with gasoline, go up to 21lbs/hr.

Did the 422 cam lobe at idle real bad? I am putting Tom Morana stage 3 heads with larger valves.polished and ported with stiffer spring, Pace setter ceramic headers, BBK 66mm throttle body with a 1" spacer, K&N filter, electric fan, E3 spark plugs, Taylor wires, Accel coil pack, with 3" duel exhaust. This is why I'm looking into the cam and injectors. This all new to me but fun!!!! Tax checks are great....

There was a very slight lope at idle. Sitting at a stoplight in gear the engine would vary about 100rpm about twice a second, then smooth out for a few seconds, then do it again. It's nothing to be concerned about.

It is my opinion, and you're free to disagree with me on this, that the bigger throttle body, electric fan, fancy spark plugs and wires, and coil are not needed, and are a waste of money. Mine ran great with the stock stuff.

Edit: Keep in mind that the stock 4.0L valvetrain is non-adjustable. When you put in a different cam, you'll need to change it in order to set proper lifter preload. Here is my solution:

Also, when using a higher lift cam, there is not enough room for the stock umbrella type valve stem seal. You'll need to go to something different.

When you went with a 422 cam, did you have to change the push rods and valve springs or could you use the stock one's? And yes I agree with you about all the bling I'm going to put on it but it is my toy.:icon_hornsup:

Did you click on my link in the last post to see what I did? I ran pushrods and rocker arms from a 2.9L Ford V6.

As for the valve springs, I used the Comp Cams recommended springs for that cam, which, if I remember correctly, are the Comp number 988-12.

Thanks for your in put. You've been a great help.
