Are Rangers geared poorly?

I've read about a few guys on here who did 302 swaps and kept the stock 7.5 rear. As long as you aren't beating on it like Chris Brown, you're gonna be fine.

Main thing is that first gear in a stick Ranger ain't all that low. 31's should have 4.10 gears and anything bigger should run 4.56.

My 94 super cab 4x4 , 4.0 and 5 speed has 3:73 gears , and I am now running 32x11.5x15 Mud Claws.

It does take a little more gas to get it rolling , but in general there is no real perceivable difference.

I can say my gas mileage is down a bit , but power is still good.
I find very few hills I need to shift into 4 for on the high way.

Yesterday I took it out in the rocks,mud, and some snow to test my new manual 1345 swap.

I think I would like to go with 4:10 or 4:56 to regain some low end, but in general all is good .

what kinda mileage to you get with your 32's and 3.73's? Also what do the 32's truly measure out to 31's or 33's?

I know what 177CIOfPureLove means, while the number isn't huge, every 1st gen ranger i've driven with a stick has had a very hard time taking off in 1st. Then i drove a 2000 ranger and it was the easiest to drive manual transmission i've ever driven. The 2000 could easily take off in 1st on idle. and to equal the difficulty the 1st gens have in taking off i would say the 2000 would have to take off in 3rd at least.

^^^x2 my 89 b2 (31x10.50 m50d 2.9L/3.73) in first is a beast - just doesn't wanna go... I probly have something else going on with the motor too tho . Thanks for the great thread this is really demystifying gearing for me

FeelinFroggy, I have not had time to measure the true height, looks like 31 plus...
I have not run a real life mileage check since I put them on , but a guess is a little less than when I had the 31's.
To answer your question , with the 31's I was averaging 21 , almost all of my driving is on 2 lane highway , with large amounts of curves and elevation change 600' up to 4000' and back.at an average speed of 60 mph and 75 mile round trip , was taking 4 gallons 18.75 gallons

On a regular freeway I usually pull 23-25 @ 70mph.

I have not been on the freeway with the new tires , but retracing the same highway driving , i am down to maybe 16-17 on the mountain roads.
I will measure the tires tomorrow , as I will be getting chains made for them

My 88 Ranger seems to be all stock with the 2.9 and a 5 spd manual, it is my first standard trans vehicle and going from a 90HP straight six mustang to this. I didn't notice any power loss ;P being that it is my first standard trans vehicle, the only thing i notice is that I need to get around 2k to get it rolling smoothly... don't know if this is bad or good but thats where I feel it is comfortable to get going.

I am surprised at how this thread caught on. I feel a lot better not being the only one. I agree though my dad had a 98' 4 cyl ranger and it was the smoothest thing I have ever driven gear wise.

lol, shouldnt be suprised, there are ALOT of members on this site, alot of us are walking encyclopedias for all knowledge rangers lol
