Are my shocks suppose to bottom out!?

The only force on the shock under extension is the coil spring. Not much different than a strut under extension. I don’t see what the issue is?

2 factors to consider here.
1 is the tension on the spring is lightest at full extension, agreed it's no big deal.
2 is how fast the shock hits the limit. good shock vs worn makes a huge difference.

I need to replace my shocks. I noticed there are two lengths for the 2wd. One is around 13.5", the other is around 18". The Motorcaft site indicates the Motorcraft replacement to be part number ASH1092, but no specifications on length. Looks like I'm going to take one out to measure it. I'm trying to figure out what the best replacements would be that are closest to original ride quality other than the Motorcraft. I may just buy them if I can't figure out anything else.

That's what we are saying... unless you get your fishing truck airborne often... it will probably never see the bottom of the shock. if you do go airborne regularly... put limiting straps on the fishing truck.

But what if he does go airborne? Will the bolts holding the shocks in place break and allow his wheels to fall off?

Just a note, never had any luck with KYB shocks. Even Monroe, Rancho, and ProComp hqve Ben more misses than hits with my Jeeps. Currently sacking money away for Bilstien monotubes for the 88.
But who makes the shocks for Ford, and more specifically, for the Ranger? I've been trying to figure it out and so far I'm coming up with Tenneco, which makes Monroe and Rancho. Another company that may be supplying shocks for Ford is TRW/Sachs.

No ideal. Never thought to do that, either. Interested if you get to the bottom of it. My truck is not exactly stock, though.

it depends on your trucks front suspension, for the 98 thru 2011 models coil spring trucks get short shocks, torsion bar systems get longer shocks.

nope. the bolts and mounts are strong enough.

every time you use a jack or lift the shocks bottom out.

These KYB'S ride pretty darn good. I'd love to use bilsteins but I can't justify almost 100 bucks per shock on a pickup truck...

I'm aware of this. However, the sticker on the shock cross-references to the same part number for the longer shock.

I know, I was just being silly. I had a visual of someone flying over a speed bump, going airborne with both front wheels coming off, then the front of the truck smashing into the asphalt on the other side of the speed bump with one tire rolling across people's lawns and the other tire maybe taking out some kid on a bicycle.
