I just had a 93 Ranger given to me this weekend. The truck seems to run okay but under hard(er) acceleration it shakes in all gears. The shifter really shakes and it will instantly smooth out and then shake again (sometimes). I drove it back to my house (about 80 miles) today and it did fine cruising along at 50-55 on flat roads but when I had press the gas to maintain speed going up a grade, it would start the shaking described above. It was intermittent and will do it in all gears. I assume the transmission is going? It's almost impossible to diagnose this stuff over the net, but if you guys have any insight please respond. Thought it might be a motor mount a first, but higher torque seems cause it so that is why I suspect tranny....

More info: Truck is a 93 with 151k. 5sp with 3.0. Overall good shape. Not bad at all if I can fix this issue on the cheap!

Thanks in advance, Tom

Does it shake in idle/neutral? Mine had the shakes bad like that and also did it in N... Turned out I had 2 shot rings on one side of the block resulting in no compression from the 2cylinders

Higher torque actually lends itself to the idea of a bad mount. Check your engine mounts.

Good question, runs fine in neutral...

I'd start with those things and go from there.

Those are gonna be your prime suspects for now.

Your trans mount could be at fault, but those are a rare failure item. I mean I've seen 1 in over 1000 cars that was bad, and that truck had been beat to the point crushing it would have been a mercy.

+1on all the above, also I am not sure but I think the extended cabs have a2piece(small yoke thing) drive shaft that needs grease....I don't know if you have ex cab

All 4x4s have the slip-yoke in the long part of the d-shaft. 4x2s have it built into the trans. If the grease has dried up it can cause a vibration, but this doesn't sound like that. It was in my next round of ideas though.

The slipping under strain can simply be your spark plug wires arcing off the block or each other. I'd take a look at that before tearing into the trans or spending too much on it.
