I just got my truck rewired, and now it won't start!

During my rewiring I was testing a relay by using the battery, and the relay had two commons, I shorted them at the battery, almost burned my fingers.

now I got everything back together, it will crank but not start, so doing some typical ECC-IV diagnostics, I noticed that the engine cranks down quickly and I have to put the battery on the charger.

I disconnected the battery, no sparks flew, so I don't have a short. I noticed checking the battery I was loosing one-tenth of a volt every ten minutes.

It's a everstart battery made in September of '03. It is apparently shorted, I tried to "shock" it with the 50 amp start setting on the battery charger, still won't hold a charge.

Ideals? recomendations for a good replacement? Cost IS a issue, this is my "project/backup" vehicle.

I would guess you discharged the battery and sulfated it. Given the age, I would say it's new battery time.

The battery is nearly 6 years old, what I have noticed is that batteries generally have a life span of about 5 years, some less, some more, I would be buying a new battery

if you feel like it. Replace the acid in the battery with fresh acid. It may bring it back for awhile. There are also a few products that will clean up the plates some but you have to be fairly careful with them. If you use too much the battery will short right out and melt down.

Literally melt down. possibly catch on fire. acid all over the place. =>

Its safer and in the long run better to get another battery.

You can try to use a de-sulfating charger. Don't know if that will work or not, but has been recommended to me by several customers. Best option is to charge the battery and have it tested at a local auto parts store.

With a Interstate battery 58, 59, or 65, you're looking at about $74.95~$95.95 for a new one. With a Sear's Diehard Platium 65, over $200. I have the Diehard Plat, and I gotta say thats one really strong battery. 930 CCA worth of power and turns the little 4-banger over in the winter just as if it would in the summer.

I always filled my old batteries with water and dropped an aspirin into each cylinder, the aspirin distills or does sumthing to the water and my batteries no matter how old always held a better charge. it wont work for the maintenance free batteries. After that I would double check my electrical skills and buy a red top.

Get a new battery..........dont be so cheap.............Jeeezzzz.
