My ranger isn't doing so good (2.9) and i was just looking around at options for a possible replacement and came across the picture below. From the little i've seen of them they seem pretty descent although i'm not a fan of the independent front suspension and the smaller bed. But if anyone has one, how are they on power (the 4.0 ones) and gas mileage? are there any known issues with them? and do the 4x4's have low range? if they don't i guess they're out as a possible replacement. Lifted they don't even look like the same truck. How can anyone not the look of this? minus the scoop of course.

that looks badass!!
and yes the 4x4 on them has a low range. its basically an explorer.

great!!! now if they only had a straight axle with lock outs. Would you happen to know if any had manual 4x4 (a lever instead of electric shift)

nope no manual t case. some had manual transmission tho...

The manual transmixers are so rare they are hardly worth mentioning.

The IRS is a night and day improvement for a dd that doesn't see much if any road time.

4x4 defaults to auto, 1/2 a tire revolution and you in 4x4 whether you want to be or not.

yeah Frank, i would love one too.
the only explorer i could own(cuz it has bed, well tries to have bed lol)

Don't let the front and rear IRS dissuade you. I know people hate Hondas but our Pilot, which we have had for 5 years now, is such an awesome vehicle that you shouldn't give a single thought to independent suspension. My wife's parents have a cabin on Lake Monroe and it's 5 miles of washboard. In my crewcab diesel the damned rear end of the truck floats back and forth across the road and I can barely do 30mph. The Pilot doesn't even register the washboard and I do 50 on the straight-aways and 35 on the curves. It's amazingly smooth on the rough stuff. It takes the long drive (which we do very often in the summer) and makes it a short one.

Obviously I don't take my wife's car offroad, but one day when she buys a new one, I will. And with a rear locking axle and a short WB I won't be afraid to see what it will traverse.

Depends on which years you are looking at..the 01-05 are on a RBV chassis/explorer mix with the 31 spline 8.8 rear end.

The 07-to present are IFS and IRS, have auto 4x4 and the 4.6L v8 option.

I own an 05 and we love it to death. Its the perfect mix of suv and truck. After 2002 the 4.0L SOHC was improved upon and the infamous timing chain cassette issues were solved.

They are a stout little unit and have decent power. We tow a 24 foot travel trailer with ours and its gets the job done.

Gas mileage is usually around 18-20 in town and 22-24 on the highway.

I'm on my second Sport Trac and love 'em to death too. If you can get by with the short bed, make sure to get one with the bed extender, then it is the Swiss Army knife of trucks.

Mechanically they are identical to Explorers and will run forever. The trannys are sensitive to being flushed regularly and you should do that every 30,000 miles, t-case lube also. If you buy a used one and can't be sure that that's been done, then have the tranny flushed and t-case lube changed immediately. More than 75k on it, I would have the axles done too.

The bed is plastic and pretty much impervious to dents, rust, etc. You can get tonneau covers if it does not have a factory cover. I prefer a vinyl cover because I often need the whole bed open. The factory hard cover is nice but you have to unbolt it to remove it. The seats are vastly better than Ranger seats. '03+ Sport Tracs have 4 wheel disc brakes which are vastly better than Ranger brakes (I've owned Rangers too). The stock shocks on Gen 1 Sport Tracs are way too soft and should be replaced immediately if they are still there. A Gen 1 Trac ('01-'05) is more off-roady than a Gen 2 ('07-'10) and has better ground clearance. Gen 1 4x4's have a t-case skidplate but no fuel tank skidplate although you can get one from Ford Accessories. Gen 2's have no t-case plate but you can get a fuel tank plate from Ford as it was a fleet vehicle option.

Some up-level Tracs have leather interiors, and all of them have a rubber floor mat and not carpet. An aftermarket company did have a carpet kit available a while ago. The Adrenalin model has a hi-zoot Pioneer stereo and subwoofer from the factory.

As far as lifting a Gen 1 Trac, like late-model Rangers and Explorers you are limited to the Superlift suspension lift or a body lift.

If you're looking for a used Gen 1 I would suggest an '03+ to get the 4 wheel discs. If you want a new one, move fast because this is the last year they are making them.

i think the 4x4 is set as the rangers, 2 h 4h and 4l

Sport Tracs might be different, but my parent's '02 Explorer has 4x4 Auto, 4x4 Hi and 4x4 Low. I have only seen that or AWD in 02+ Explorers.

Sport Tracs are different. The Gen 1 Trac ('01-'05) is based on the older '95-'01 Explorer and uses the same t-case as a Ranger with no AWD. There are 4x2 Sport Tracs in all years also.

The Gen 2 Sport Trac ('07-'10) is based on the '02+ Explorer and most use a 4-Auto, 4-Hi, 4-Lo t-case. 4-Auto is not AWD, rather the computer kicks in the front axle if it detects slippage. '07+ Sport Trac Adrenalins use an AWD t-case with no low range. Gen 2 Tracs also have no limited-slip available and use traction control instead, which in deep snow I hate.

WOW!! alot of info here. Thanks for all of it. I want to go with a 1st gen, i don't have alot to spend on one though. and i like the look of the older ones better. and that mileage is great, it's basically the same as my 2wd '88 ranger. Most of the ones on ebay seem pretty high but there's one listed on craiglist for $4500 and doesn't say it has any issues which was the first thing i thought just comparing the price to ebay. I guess i should look up the Kelley blue book on it first. If i do get one it'll be quite a jump from the newest vehicle i've ever owned being an '88.
