looks like a cotton beetle. is it a good size? we get those and they are a little bigger than a quarter up to about 2" long

whoever told me they are called cotton beetles was telling me the local name, i guess? maybe since they grow so much cotton here?

anyways, here is what i found

Click beetles — Texas Insect Identification Tools (texashighplainsinsects.net)
Yep. Thats what it was. The 1st one i seen was walking and i picked it up on a stick it instantly tucked its legs and played dead.

It was also in some wood i cut that was rotting in the middle. About 2 inches long

I've seen one of those before at my parent's old house and found out it's a click beetle. That one's Alaus Oculatus, but Superj beat me to it. That was the first time I'd seen one and never seen one since.

Click beetles are kind of interesting. There was a much smaller one in my camper once. I did what any reasonable person would do with a bug in their camper and stepped on it. It started click-jumping all over the place and despite squishing it multiple times it would not die. I ended up guiding it to the door and it click-jumped outside.

i see those beetles a few times a year here. the first time, i called the kids and the wife because of how huge it was. now that we see them regularly though, no one cares but me and the cats. the cats play with them, swatting them around and stuff. i think they fall out of my weird trees that grow all over my yard. maybe they are eating the trees and the wind blows them off? i don't know but i have seen them for about 5 years in a row around may.

Use to see those all the time in the pine trees. There is another one up here that looks very similar but has two really long antennas... called those drop beetles because the would often drop out of trees and land on you.

Ask Clarice if She's ever seen one,

you see a ton of them at big national vw meets. bunches

I’m surprised there was only one comment about it being a click beetle. Back in the day it’d draw a crowd on the playground if someone found one.
