I have a 8.8 im wanting to have regeared to 4.88, but want to stay away from the expensive 4wd shops. Anyone in Puget Sound able to do a very good job in there spare time? Not a complete vehicle ,just the rear end

If you want warranty work you better just pay for it. I had my 2wd Ranger regeared back in 2000 and I have not had any issues with the 4.10 I had put it. It cost me right at $400 total for the gear and labor back then. Shop around and see if you can get a good price for a shop. You don't really have to go to a 4WD parts place for that work. What I hear from my friends who work at shops around my area have told me lately it is around $1000 for a
4wd (front and rear) with parts and labor the past couple of years. Just best to call around and see.
