im cutting weight to join either the marines or army, havent decided yet. anyone have any tips or advice on what to be prepared for and what to expect?

Congrats on joining. If you're set on being a selfpropelled sandbag, go marines.

Basic/boot will suck. Keep your head down, don't stand out good or bad. If you can make it to graduation with your TI/DI not really knowing your name, you've done well.

+1

BUT AIR FORCE will work you to death, but wont send you in combat.

if you go marine corps be strong in your mind

im in the navy and i work with marines (landing craft). run a lot, watch what you eat, i lost 15 lbs. by just stop drinking everything except water, milk, apple juice. oh and im headed out on my second deployment to africa in 14 days. good luck man and dont give up.

You're an old man for just enlisting. Lot's of bad living to suffer for by this time. I went in at 17 before I had time to get sedintary. It's been 22 years since I went to bootcamp but if you were overweight, they busted your balls really hard. I'm sure its just as bad now.

well thats the reason im cutting weight now and will be in top physical condition when i do join .. my goal is to be able to run 5 miles non stop before i enlist ..

I would work on running a mile in 7 minutes and not waste time on the long run. If you can do a mile in 7 you will be in good enough shape. You bootcamp runs will start out short. You get efficient at running and soon it doesn't burn that many calories or increase your strength. Work on increasing your speed over a mile and the longer runs will be no problem for you.

Work on pull-ups if you are joing the marines and pushups if you are joining the army.

Congrats on joining. I am going to Army boot camp in April. I am pumped.

Like Will said, run a mile in 7 minutes or less and you will be good.

What he said...27 years since bootcamp for me. Fresh outta highschool. Been 17 years since I got out.......Am I really THAT old? :shok:

I just got out after doing my 4 year enlistment, as everyone else said on what to work on is good, and not having yoru name known in the end is good. I managed to do that, What type of job are you considering, i was a heavy equipment operator, not too bad of a job.

Gonna go off on a bit of a tangent here..I was a heavy equipment operator too. Seabees. what about you?

navy here, and loving every min. of it. why you chose any branch over the other is up to you. imho if you want the best off all the worlds go navy and become a seabee (i did) you get the "sandbag" army and marines plus the smarts and easyer life of the navy and airforce. you can become a plumer, diesel mechanic, electrician, builder, equipment operator and engineering aid. you dont go on ships and (3.5 years never seen one) you work hand and hand with the army and marines but dont get there bull shit. and if you get out you have a skilled trait that they cant outsorce.

i know im bias so its up to you buddy but its good to talk to people in the service before you pick. and find out whats out there, i got lucky i didnt mean to become a seabee but i wanted to be a mechanic. so there are alot of little things out there like that might help you on the long run.

o and dont let yor age bother you. i joined when i was 21. and your maturity helps you. dont worry about standing out just dont be a shit head.

lol didnt know there were more of my brother out there

CM2 here

WHO RAA

My dad was a Marine. If I had to pick, I would go Marines. They have a certain sense of pride that is not as strong from the other armed forces. If you have any doubt, rent Full Metal Jacket. It is the closest any movie has ever got to real boot camp.

Just remember,

"God has a hard-on for Marines because Marines kill everything they see!"
