i'm really seriously looking at a 77 280z. if ya got a carfax open, i'd be interested in knowing where the car has been!

let me know!

It will barely show crap. Have a shop look at it unless you are familiar with z-cars.

Worse that that. It wouldn't show anything for a 1977 280Z because Carfax requires a 17 digit VIN. 17 digit VIN's didn't appear until 1981.

Do a search on this site with the search button, Bro. So many people have asked the same question, so many time on this site. I remember seeing a member saying he has an account. Use your eyes and check for any frame repair....rust...colision damage. Carfax is not all that reliable....a lot of things never get reported. That's a matter of fact.

a lot of things never get reported..

I think I remember hearing if it doesn't go through an insurance company, it does not get reported. So just having it on a police report would not show up on Carfax IIRC.

Every one needs to stop worrying about what Carfax does or doesn't include. It's a moot point. As I said in post #3. You can't run a Carfax report on a 1977 280Z since Carfax requires a 17 digit VIN which no vehicle had until 1981.:icon_cheers:

We read that, thanks for your input. Straycat had some valuable information for anyone who may search this thread in the future, so he added it. I don't think any of us were "worried".

All I meant is that Carfax needs to be taken completely out of the equation. Both of Straycat's posts are spot on. As far as a 1977 280Z goes, I owned a 1978 for 12 years; sold it May 09. Not only should spdcrazy check for frame repair, rust, colision damage, etc. but also check the fuel and EFI systems on those cars very carefully. Their fuel systems are prone to corrosion/sediment problems when the cars sit inactive for too long and many of the EFI components, sensors, etc. are getting much harder to source. My old Z:

Sweet ride, for sure!

But getting parts for any old Datsun (used to own a 76 b210 or some crap...) is freakin' impossible sometimes. Honestly, I'd say run, run like hell. Buy something that can be fixed.

That's one of the main reasons I sold all three of my Datsuns in Mid 2009.
I also had a 1979 810 2dr. Hardtop:

And a 1964 L320 Pickup:

I have no idea how this thread got so damn hostle! but thanks for your thoughts anyways guys. didn't realize it required a 17 digit vin!

however, i'm not worried about the possible damage being or not being on the carfax. like my OG post said, i would like to know where its been!

either way, i am fairly savy with the Z cars, and it seems to be a good project too!

Zero rust anywhere, under the taillights, behind seats, rain guards etc. engine is solid and clean, interior as always, needs help, but its a classic, i expected that. body is straight and needing minor work as well as paint. only thing that i'm kinda bummed about is it has a carb setup on it. but thats ok, if the wifey will let me, i have bigger plans for it anyways.

No hostility here. Just trying to make a point. After I made the comment there were three more posts about Carfax. The size of the font was just to be noticed; not for hostility. Back to Datsuns. I owned at least one Datsun at any given time for almost 40 years until I sold those three in 2009. I have a few Datsun friends in Arizona. If you like I could ask around on the Datsun site I frequent.

no worries. and it looks like you have had your share of toys too! i need to get my head back in the datsun/nissan game as it is. my main focus is on my 94 300zx again, but i need a good daily, and the 280z fits the bill! the b2 on 35's just isn't cutting it for my 1.5hr drive to work!

I used my 280Z as a DD for a little over two years w/no problem other than a starter that I replaced in my work's parkiing lot. I stopped using it as a DD however when it got stolen and bought a 1991 NX1600 to drive back and forth to work.
