Luckily I live in a college town (Bloomington, Indiana) so I applied to IU and was accepted. In-state tuition is a little less than HALF of out of state tuition and since IU is a Big Ten school, me living here pretty much saved my ass.
So your friend got a business degree? Along with almost every other Dick and Jane entering the educational system. The problem is not entirely due to the economic situation. Your friend entered the job market that has been overflowing with applicants for the better part of 2 decades. My school had 100% employment for all of our graduates. All of our graduates last year are "afloat." Most of the trades, are still holding on, some are hurting, but they are not feeling it quite as bad as non-trade jobs. Fact is that America is pretty fat and lazy and it seems that a good job these days requires $100K+ and a corner office.
To the OP, welcome to the world of college... You will fill out more forms than you can believe... It seems like Universities are given an unlimited supply of paper and told they have to get rid of it... Just wait until you start doing undergrad research, they throw even more forms at you... I'll give you a good tip... Get a giant filing cabinet and make copies of all the forms you get... They seem to lose them a lot, lol...
I love the northwest! We have a program for Alaska, Washington, Oregon and some of the other states where you pay the in state tuition as long as you live in the northwest. So I can get in state in Oregon even though I have lived in Aly for the past 8 or 9 years.
Why get drunk at a party?... seriously I don't get it, your feelin bad the day after, can't remember S**t that happened, possibly wreck your truck driving home (which has happened to a number of people on TRS). I like being the sober person, I know what happened I can stop bad stuff going down, drive fine and feel fine in the morning.
The WUE? When I went to Portland last quarter, I got that and it's ok. You pay 150% of the out of state tuition, and time spent in that program can't be used to build residency in that state. It only applies to certain degrees too, so keep that in mind.
I'm all for going to a community college beforehand, hell it's like 1/4 of the cost. If you live in a college town while doing so, you'll hardly notice a difference except the money you save.
