I was watching some trail repairs on an Ultimate Adventure video and was wondering if anyone here's had to do any major trail repairs other than swapping a Ranger hub or D28/35 front axle shaft?

hmm. I changed my transmission in my 79 blazer in the middle of the woods.. used my winch to pull the front end about 3 feet off the ground, blocked it and changed it out :)

We should attempt an engine swap on a trail ride just to see if we could do it.

I've haven't had to do anything major, but a friend I was wheeling with broke a tie rod on his nissan. By no means extreme, but pretty crippling nonetheless. He welded back together with some jumper cables and drove to the trail, and I met him with a new one.

I'm doing to have to try jumper cables for that.

Yeah they worked out pretty well, just took a little while I think. Now that I carry cables with me, I should grab a few rods just in case.

i have a battery powered mig welder that can run on up to three car batteries hooked in series. Welds damn hot, had to use it a few times and fits in a small case about the size a cordless drill would.

I'm curious to see what happens. There's no adjustment. I can't be that good or underhood welders wouldn't sell. Right? I'm skeptical, but optimistic. I'll give a report after I try it.

What's the brand and model of that?

Firepower somethin or another, bought it awhile ago from my snap on rep

with one battery it barely welds thins heet metal (to hot) with two batteries i cannot weld exhaust (to hot, just burns through) and with three batteries it is damn hot and welds awesome on thick stuff

well welds as good as non-gas wire can that is

Last June on our annual Chinamans run, one of the guys in his 85 Ranger had the rear driveshaft break. I only have two pics but it worked great to get him off the trail & he got back to Denver........a 140 mile ride. He used his power inverter to run his DeWalt grinder to grind the edges of the two pieces. Then he hooked up his portable mig to the batteries & welded away. It worked like a charm.
