I just got my mom's old escape for my grad present it's an 01 with 4wd and a duratec 3.0 v6. it's a rocket compared to my 92 3.0 anybody else own an escape just trying to get a feel for everyones opinions:headbang:

One of my buddies had the 03 4wd (not really sure if it is a real 4wd, more like an awd). He really liked it and it was very reliable. There is not much you can do with it. No real lift kits for it but you can cut the wheel wells to add a taller tire but that is about it unless somebody else on this site knows more.

I called a friend at a 4x4 shop and he gave me some info:

Here is a couple of things for the Escape. Only about 1-2 inch coil spring lift. BDS has one with maybe 2 inches. See the BDS install instructions and see if they have one for your Escape.

The best thing for an escapse is to set it up like a rally vehicle, otherwise your looking into alot of custom work. Its front wheel drive with a part time rear wheel drive alot like the honda stuff I believe.

They are pretty capable already though. There is a video out there somewhere of a stock Escape in Tokyo doing a demo track that I doubt a stock Ranger could go down without tipping or getting stuck.

It's a fast little bugger because it was that 24V Duratec, not the Vulcan.

Just make sure to keep your tires rotated regularly or the will chop so bad you could use them as a saw blade. Pretty much every time you change your oil. Cross the fronts and bring the rears straight forward every 5K miles.

They are fun little cars though.

thanks guys she's had it for a while now but the wheel bearing is bad so i can't really drive it now but from what i've read wheel bearings are a very common flaw with escapes i needed a good reliable car to drive to college cause i'll be living at home and driving around 50 miles a day. when she first bought the car she had to have the cam sensors replaced she had 2 replaced does anyone know how many there is in these Duratecs?

my mom owns an escape, she bought it new in 05 after some border hoper smashed our ranger in on the side. we did fix the ranger eventually with junk yard parts tho. its got a v6 but only fwd. but its fast tho, hauls balls for a grocery getter, the acceleration is a little to touchy for my taste.

My wifes ride is a 02 escape and we love it, it's not a 4wd unfortunately... it is decent on gas and it is a fun to drive very capable vehicle. The 3.0 V6 auto has a nice bit of power. I do have a link to an escape forum if you are interested pm me and i'll give it to you... alot of good guys there just like here.... they have ford service bulletins posted and factory procedures posted for certain repairs there as well.. a real wealth of knowledge.

It's a Ford Escape: Just drive it and do maintenance. You won't be impressing anyone by lifting it and putting some tires under it.

My bro has an 01 3.0 4x4, sister has a 05 3.0 4x4, parents have an 09 3.0 4x4, my buddy has a 06 3.0 4x4. Bro's has 80k on stock tires, still has a little tread left (but all chopped up). Awesome vehicles.

Make sure you replace those wheel bearings with timkin bearings. Good stuff!

My mom bought an '02 brand new. Its got 110k on it now with no major problems, just your standard stuff, I did brakes on it when it was fairly new, and this past summer I put in a passenger axle and drivers lower control arm (balljoint went bad). Other than that, pretty reliable car so far.

Meh, Timken is made overseas now. I put a Timken on my Buick and it started making noise 6 months later, hopefully my warranty replacement doesn't do the same. Haven't had a problem with the Carquest brand I put on the other side a year before that.

ford escape good reliable grocery getter? all who agree say I
