where I work is a small family business that makes sand cores for foundries. there was about 10 people on day shift, 4 on 2nd. Well, management had the “bright” idea to move some production to 2nd and bring 3 people from day shift to nights so that the 1st shifters wouldnt be working so close to each other. Every night this week Ive had a machine running right next to mine. So much for space. I dont mind the job too much in winter but summer its a sweatbox in there, end of shift cleanup is the worst, you’re sweating and sweeping up sand. Its a mess. I expected we would be down but weve still got orders to fill so whatever foundries we supply must be still in operation. ..... at least for now.

I did a little sand casting in high school. That was 40 years ago. If you have the incination, do a small write up on what you do. I'd be interested in pouring some aluminum sometime in the future.

The company I work for manufactures pumps for anything from wastewater to fire suppression . Our business relies heavily on castings from foundries , so for myself , I very much appreciate what you do . Without a supply chain our business will suffer . Thanks again !!!

My doors are still open... but the financial drain started a couple weeks ago. Next weeks projections are looking like 60% down over last year.

There will come a point I will have no choice then to shut down. It will cost a BUNCH less to sit idle then to operate daily at a substantial loss.

Little late to the party, I don't check in here as often as I used to. I'm still working too, kinda ticks me off, but will probably be for the best.

I understand what you mean. I’m right in the middle of doing a clutch on a 2010 Hyundai. I have no idea how the hell the guy was driving on this. But I for sure haven’t seen a clutch this bad before.

Reminds me of the probe I used to have. Bought it as a cheap beater with over 200K miles. Knew it needed a clutch when I bought it. Didn't know it had been run so long with a bad clutch that the thrust bearing in the block was literally gone, and crankshaft was eating into the block. Replaced the clutch, replaced the crank, really needed to replace the block too. Finally gave up and donated to local college when third gear failed. Still regret it, that car was much more fun to drive than the Kia, but the Kia has been much more reliable.

Being a DOD civilian during the week and a Traditional Guardsman, I don’t see us shutting down.

I don’t have that option. I can't fix a fuel tank via telework.

DOD civilian down here. Since you mention Fuel Tanks I'm assuming that its aircraft maintenance, so which one do you work? I've been on 15s for the last 15 years, but currently on 130s.

They're going to keep us open too. I know the work is needed and important, but seems kinda crazy with 15K+ people working elbow to elbow. Especially when the govt wants us to practice social distancing to prevent spread and this installation would be a vector to infect the entire state. I understand the importance of what we do and will continue working until they stop me (or I take leave to escape the BS), but I was really expecting a shutdown or furlough the other week. Really I think either of those would be better than what they did.

Last week the installation commander gave employees that are considered "high-risk" for COVID-19 the option to sign a letter and take 60 days of admin leave unless they are called back sooner. Problem is that nearly everyone signed it, high-risk or not. My hanger usually has about 250 maintenance personnel, Friday we were down to about 30 mechanics, most of which were contractors. Rumor is that they plan to hold everyone to that 60 day letter and require proof of prior condition upon return. Be interesting to see what happens in the next few weeks.

My wife has a cold of some sort... she swears it’s not COVID19. If she’s awake, she’s coughing. If she’s asleep she’s snoring.
