Any bicycle enthusiasts?

What I usually do before I mount a tire is run my fingers around the inside surfaces of the wheel and of the tire. In cases like this you'll usually find a ding in one of the spoke nipples or a tiny sliver of metal through the tire.

Sum bitch!

Houston, we have a problem.

Presta valve. Most hand pumps from the last couple decades have a reversible head that can accommodate Schrader or Presta.

Edit: bicycle hand pumps. Dunno about pumps for other things.

My pump will do Presta or Schrader, but the hole in the wheel is too small for the Schrader. I'm tempted to drill the damn thing out. I'm not a fan of Presta valves.

Oh- I made the stupid assumption that the new one was the presta.
🤦‍♂️

Edit: I was thrown by how much cleaner they both were than the valves on my bikes. 😉

I did, too. I've never had a bike fancy enough to come with presta valves.

I read online that you can drill the hole out with an 8.5 mm drill bit, which I happened to have. The backside of the hole was big enough, but the face wasn't. I didn't have to drill much. Deburred and installed the tube.

There is supposed to be tape around the inside of the rip to keep the spokes from hurting the tube as well.

I used to ride bikes all over as a kid. After years of meaning to pick up a "nice" bike I found a supppsedly 10yo Trek off marketplace. After much research I deduced it is actually a 1999 model. After a slug of walmart bikes as a kid it is still the nicest bike I have ridden. Still has the original tires on it, I've been shopping for new ones lol. It's fun to have for scooting around campgrounds when camping, I just put a rack on the back for a tackle/lunch box.

I forgot how much I enjoy riding my bike.

There is a big difference in the bikes you find at store like Walmart and ones from a real bike shop. You pay for the better quality but I've found them to be worth the price. Though, a used higher end bike is nothing to sneeze at. That or a model on close out because it is being discontinued. My mountain bike was like that. My touring bike, well I paid through the nose for that one since the type is so uncommon,

Sometimes I struggle to find the motivation to ride. After 2 pedal strokes I always have that same feeling of "I'm rolling, this is great."

People have theorized this is about flashbacks to childhood and feelings of freedom. Sounds about right to me.

i have yet to ride a 10000 dollar pedal bike that i can even sort of pretend that maybe someone could justify 10 grand for it.

1200 is a shit bike these days.

gaurdian seems to have decent quality for 3-500 range....the schwinn traxian at jacks was decent...600 seemed steep for it.

the trek is definitely a nice bike too....seen a few in the 5-800 range i can reason as value worthy...recently rode a couple. huge difference from the walmart bike.

10,000 dollar bikes are for people who make a living with them, like Olympic riders.

My mountain bike was a $600 or so bike that I got for $350. It's Diamondback Topanga.

My touring bike is basically the F250 of the bike world, with a trike being the F350. It was made to carry camping equipment, clothes, and food. A steel frame for strength and ability to get the frame welded anywhere. Mountain bike rear gears with a triple ring cranks. Wider tires for a more comfortable ride since they could be all day long, multiple days in a row. Mounts for racks on both the front and rear. And disc brakes for longevity and not having to worry about wet brakes. It's a Raleigh Sojourn. When I bought it, $1,000 for a bike was considered mid range, but it is a very specialized mid range.

My ex-girlfriend was a triathlete. Her bike was so light you could pick it up with your little finger. I forgot how much she said it cost, but you could buy a car with what it cost. I thought it was insane that someone would spend so much for a bicycle.

in my messing around with bikes, that rubber band that covers the ends of the spokes is pretty important. if it is missing or dry rotted, as mentioned before duct tape or even electrical tape around the rim a few times will help.

my current bike is a 21 year old Mongoose with full suspension. I have brought it to a couple TRS trail rides as a campsite transportation.

them presta valves look fancy...

Mine was $150 :icon_twisted:

It is just a 820 so nothing super high end even when it was new. It shifts nice, the brakes are nice it has a lot of metal in it (brake levers etc). A box store bike everything is flexible plastic that just feels cheap.

It is also like the actual right size for me, back when I was a kid it was "oh, you are pretty tall you better get a 26" and that was about all anybody knew. My Trek is still a 26" but with the 22.5" frame my long legs can actually do their thing and put power down. I was surprised after not riding for 20 years I could basically jump on it and go.

It is also kind of unique in that is a 820 Aluminum, they only made them for a year or two. So compared to my previous bikes the thing weighs nothing which also makes it both nice to ride and throw in the back of the truck.
