the wife and i just bought a new laptop, well we bought it about 3 months ago. it came with a 90 day norton subscription, but that is about to end.

i was wondering what good free software was out there. i just dont see the need to pay for norton when there's something out there that's free and does just as good a job.

i guess i should say, i know a little bit about computers, but not much. my dad works for IBM, so whenever i have a problem i just have him come over.

thanks in advance fellers!

i've had good luck with webroot.. i have it on both my desk top and lap top.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebyte's Anti-malware and its worked pretty good for me and all the porn sites and questionable sites I go to! Haha just kidding. But it does its job for the few sites I go to like TRS and facebook. Free and has updates, probably not the best but then again I don't put anything important on my computers.

webroot has been downloaded a bunch of times on the download.com site. i may try that.

i would ask my dad, but he'll go into a long ass story about how antivirus works and why the computer was invented. lol

I had good luck with avast on a few of my pc's as far as freebies go. Might be worth a try, i have also heard a few nice things about AVG.

i've used both avast and avg, works great for awhile then seems like it won't update right..

usually i just don't care about antivirus and make sure everything is backed up that i think is important and just restore it as needed lol...

webroot is great. is there a way to get it for free???

I've never ran any of the free stuff, but a guy at work does. He's always got some BS going on with his computer I've got to fix too.

I've been telling him to rock Kaspersky. That's the only way I roll.

I bought the $30 package and it would do 3 computers for a year. I just split the cost with my stepbrother , he gave me $10 and i did his lap top,my lap top and my tower with it. so we're both happy..:icon_thumby:

i'm trying AVG for right now. if it doesnt work right then i'll go with kapersky or just buy the AVG. i'm done with norton, i've been using that for last 10 years and i'm tired of it. i had a disc that came with my first computer and all i had to do was uninstall it and then reinstall it and it would work for another year. not sure how that worked out. i have CCcleaner on it as well, so i should be fine. i just have to keep my wife off those nasty porno sites lol

When I was doing tech support, 9 times out of 10 we had to tell the customer to disable AVG because it was blocking their internet or e-mail...mostly problems with e-mail, but other than that it's not bad from what I've heard...

The last package I purchased was Bitdefender and it was a 2 year protection plan for under $50...it's now rated as number one according to this link...

damnit mark!! why do you have to wait until i've already installed something to give your 2 cents???? lol, just kidding.....thanks for the link, that sounds like a pretty good deal for 2 years

i have a feeling i'm gonna be getting rid of the AVG, it already looks like it's gonna give me problems with emails. yesterday was the last day we had the trial version of norton, so i had to do something. i'll probably break down and buy something after the 30 day version is done....i was just hoping there was some good free stuff out there. nothing good is free though.

I use Avast and Malwarebytes. Both free. My computers are so clean you could eat off them. Avast does auto updates and scheduled scans. The free version of Malwarebytes doesn't do either of those, but it will find stuff other AV's don't. BTW, Norton can be a bastage to get rid of. Download their removal tool or it ain't gone.

microsoft security essential. less of a system hog than AVG or Avast and works better.

last time i used AVG was when my computer was running really slow and i did a full virus scan with all the options enabled... found nothing. installed MSE and it found 2 trojans and fixed it.

I use Malware Bytes and TDSSKiller. I run MB every day, or every other. I run TDSSKiller about once a week. I also have a couple registry editing programs that I wouldn't suggest unless you actually know what you're doing.

You could get the free Webroot trial and then when it runs out, get it free again... But for that, you'd have to access your registry to delete things... So yea, wouldn't suggest that for you.
