the vacuum switch/solenoid on the firewall (87 ranger) ... does it send info to the EEC IV ? It has a top & bottom barbed fitting & since the former owner monkey'd with the hoses, I'm not sure how they are routed or what they're supposed to go to or from.

Autozone doesn't show a good diagram for this model & was wondering if anyone had a pic or description of how it works ? It's gotta K&N air filter so the box has been ripped out & manifold vacuum port is plugged off. Wires are still hooked to the solenoid but no hoses there either.

Since I've got white smoke & "flooded" symptoms at cold start, think I'll begin with a compression test to eliminate a cracked head, & then look at electronics & fuel problems.

been lookin everywhere for this, kinda 'splains it

scroll down to the ford ranger forum - (blacksheep josh's new whip) then open it to find 93 - 97 ranger schematics/diagrams

good stuff but I can't copy/paste the link for some reason http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/index.php

Thinking that your referring to the MAP sensor?

like this?

nah, not a MAP sensor

This is on the firewall beside the 2 relays. Has 2 barbed fittings for vacuum hoses to enter & exit. Has 2 wires, red & yellow I believe & I think it provides vacuum to the egr valve.

Not sure about it's function or how it ties into the vacuum reservoir, if at all. Excuse my ignorance but I'm an old school shadetree redneck wrench trying to grasp the computerized EFI systems. Love this old 4X4 as you can probably understand.

firewall??? or did you mean fender well

did it look like this??

BINGO ! ! ! THAT'S THE TICKET ! Yup on the fender well and as suspected it does communicate with the 'puter. Let's give that a try & see where it goes from here.

NOW.. the vacuum reservoir. How does that tie in ? Connected to the charcoal can & the two little pipes on top of the air filter to help vent emissions from the tank, or am I way off base here too ?

The original air filter box had a vacuum reservoir under it That was part of this vacuum circuit. It is for operating the EGR valve which some have removed & put a later years blocking plate over the opening on the throttle body. The 86 & 87 years have this in common. The charcoal canister is completely seperate.
