Hey all!

Name is Andrew. I'm in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I'm not new to cars/trucks/bikes, but am currently hunting for my first Ranger.

Please pardon a quick and short intro, but I have much searching to do. My last vehicle is still sitting in the shop with a busticated tranny and i'm bumming rides to/from work from Mom and the g/f while I search for the replacement vehicle. Currently trying to figure out what engine/trans i'm "after".

So, yeah ..... HI!

Andrew

Howdy Andrew...happy hunting...would you be looking for new or used?

Hi Andrew,
I'd go for the 90 up 4.0L with a 5 speed. Auto's are ok but expensive to fix (infact mine is) probably swap it out soon though.

Hi Andrew,
welcome to trs, good luck in your serch . just find something you'll be happy with..:icon_cheers:

Thanks for the warm welcome all! :icon_cheers:

Mark_88 - howdy neighbour! This time around in my vehicle search i'm not looking for pretty, i'm looking for pretty functional. If I may .....

year: don't care, but it's gotta be efi
engine: 4 cyl preferred
trans: stick preferred
2/4wd: must be 2
cab: don't care (but it's gotta have one eh! lol)
box: read above
seats: yes please
colour: no, i'm not racist :D
other: used/inexpensive, but ready to go - no projects! :annoyed:
lift/lower - don't care, but i'm really after a normal truck right now - toys after the house, especially since i'm more of a bike guy

I see you're from Barrie. If you have any leads by all means speak up! Shoot me a P.M. if advertising publicly is against the rules. I don't wanna tick anyone off, especially on my first night. :icon_thumby:

I will certainly keep my eyes open up this way...but I'd go with Red85's suggestion of a 93-97 (even though I prefer the older style)...to be honest though, the only ones I see for sale are in the used car dealerships...and I haven't seen a Ranger listed in the local papers at all...you're probably looking at 5,000 to 10,000 for the above mentioned years if they're in good shape...

I picked mine up for $500 but it was a mess...but the potential of a long-lasting vehicle was written all over it...took me a week to get that off...lol

Sounds like you could do without the projects...will definitely let you know if I find anything in Barrie though...

Look for a 93-97 with a 2.3 and a 5 speed. 305K on mine and it runs like a champ.

X2!!!

if you get a 4cyl, you wont want 4x4 (they stopped making them in i think 95 anyway). and you will def want a 5 speed! if you get an extended cab... you will be so glad!!! i know i was! anywho... i used to live in hamilton (dirt city) but somewhat miss the dump! lol.

No truck yet, but today was interesting. Looked at 3 trucks. I learned that an extended cab is a GREAT idea for a tall skinny toothpick like me (hence my username ;) ).

It seems that finding a 4 cyl/5 speed combo isn't easy, especially with an extended cab, that is in even decent condition. LOTS of rust buckets or trucks that should be parted out (sorry!).

Of today's three all were V6, which i'm hearing/reading isn't as bad on gas as I used to think (but still not great..... never is in a truck LOL). The only one I drove was a 3.0L auto reg cab step side - overall the truck wasn't great in any department nor exactly what I want, but over it's the best value. Okay, okay AND it's a step side (boing! HAHAHA). Regardless, it's currently at the top of my list.

Anyway, sorry for blabbing. Just excited I guess. :icon_bounceblue:

Still looking up here...not much in the Ranger department...but if you're over 6' the extended cab is the only way to go...I'm 6'6" and I drove a standard cab for two years...after the first year I tore out the back wall (yes, it can be done...) but that was a pig to heat in the winter...even with my efforts to reduce the overall airspace...

go with 2.9 v6 it seems to be more readily available and plenty of members know so much about them the tranny(a4ld) suck from what ive seen but the stick can be swapped for the m50 its important to look at this stuff (will it be strictly a mall crawler
or small trails nice and easy, or all out rock crawler or street performance
so many different ways to go will affect any future plans(easy or hard)
and the recessions around the world are making gas prices go down

Thanks guys, appreciated muchly!

Agreed - it's gotta be an extended cab. I learned that one pretty quick. Looked at a couple tonight - a '95 auto (private and "ify") and a '98 stick (used crack dealer - LOL). Both have their pros and cons, both are 4x4 (meh) and both would do the job, so I gotta do some haggling. Think I gotta flash some cash and see who bites. Dunno how much love I have for a used car dealer that wants $500 for a safety! :shok: (insert profuse cursing here)

There's actually an ex cab up your way in Barrie somewhere, Mark. Red one in Kijiji for $2300 ..... it's got a piece of cardboard underneath it that is keeping oil from making a mess on the driveway. :icon_confused: :shok: :icon_surprised:

(sigh) Yyyyyyup yup yup.

As for future plans - honestly, in my life right now, i'm heartily addicted to bikes. Since motorcycles entered my life I haven't given much of a crap for 4 wheels (sorry!). Truck plans are currently set to daily driver, with potential to haul bikes and/or camping gear. No inclination to go off road, at least nothing serious, but I absolutely demand comfort so it's gotta be extended cab. The rest i'm not too concerned about - I might be easy, but I ain't cheap! :icon_rofl: So far it seems almost impossible to find a 4 cyl 2wd combo with "reasonable numbers".

Thank god the gf and Mom are patient. :icon_thumby:
