OK so trying to figure out the brake situation for the swap. front dana 44 will be some extended ranger lines just piped into the D44 calipers. now the 9... not familiar with what to do and all the so called electrical problems it causes. on here threads touch on this but i am looking for detail in what ill need to do ABS wise for the 9 and it has to pass inspection as this will to my daily driver too!!

AFAIK abs isnt something they check for? unplug the fuse and hide the wire. I dont know of a way to hook up ABS onto a 9" w/o spending $$$$ and doing some custom stuff.

Use an 8.8". Stock for stock it's pretty much equal in strength, but it'll have the speed sensor on it.

Otherwise, the only way to get the ABS/speedo to work with a 9" is to rig up some sort of a sensor on the driveshaft, or to have the rear diff carrier machined for a tone ring, and then fit the sensor into the 9" third member somehow.

thats what a hear alot of is just unplug the fuse and run it all how you want. if the fuse is out though will the brake light come on? not that i wanted the abs on the 9 i could really careless i just wanted it to pass inspection.

i would think taking the fuse out would make the ABS light also go out.. if it doesnt, pull the bulb or wire if its that big of deal with inspections. Ive never had one so i wouldnt know from exp.

You will still have no speedo. The speedo reads off the rear diff speed sensor as well.

well then looks like i am going with the 8.8 now. cant have no speedo. width comparisons with the 8.8 and dana 44? close to even?

close, need to redrill or get adapters for wheels though.

ok well i figured that. if it was so much messing around with the speedo i still would do the 9 and just rip out the Abs. just out of curiousity what would the complexity of still havin my speedo with the nine? or is it like Sasquatch_Ryda said its all tied into the sensor no matter what?

the drilling and tapping to fit the sensor into the 9" wouldnt be that bad. but you have to have the ABS ring fitted to the carrier which probably would be a PITA

Is that an early Bronco or F-150 D44 you have?

If EB, use the Explorer 8.8", and have the axle flanges redrilled for 5x5.5" to match your D44. There is JUST enough room on the flange if you use thread-in wheel studs (standard press-in ones won't fit though). Then you can hand-drill (using a template) the rotors/drums to fit over the studs (it is centered by the center pilot bore, not the studs).

If it's from a F-150, then look for any '87-'96 F-150/fullsize Bronco 8.8". These are the same width as any fullsize D44s and will have the speed sensors on them.
Avoid all 8.8s earlier than '87 though, they have smaller differential crosspins (weak), and will likely lack the sensor.

Hope that helps.

ya helps alot and i do have an F-150 D44 from a 79. ya I definitely dont wanna be taping and drilling on the diff that would just get to messy and be a PITA. thanks guys. Now I know where to shop online for my early ford axles but what about the F-150/ bronco 8.8? any good sites besides broncograveyard?

**correction**I meant shop for axle parts not the axle itself just clarification.

Why not the same place?

Most places carry parts for all the common axles.
