i have an 86 2.9 4wd with a mitsu 5 speed. in 91 the engine caught fire and everything burned (engine bay). 12 years later i replaced everything with parts off another truck (same) except for it was xlt or something not quite sure cuz i didnt get the parts. finally i get it running-really bad but running i rplaced all sensors, switches, spark plugs, wires, distributer.

runs better except for one little thing. i start the engine and everythings is fine for about a minute then every sensors stop working, runs rough, lots of black smoke for about 30 secs. then everything back to normal.

codes retrieved
11
33 no egr valve
41 02 sensor never worked sense i got it running. good ground and power.

and another one but i cant remember the code something about ecm signal grounded

all grounds are hooked up i even put some extra ones to make sure. i did swap the ecm as well but it ran rough. a friend opened it up and it was toasted so i replaced it with exact one. it ran great except for that one problem. fuel reg is new as well and no vacume leaks.

like i said befor almost all sensors stop working. i confirmed this cuz i disconnected the tps while the engine was doing this and no difference as well as some other ones, that when it runs good and are disconnected runs rough.

recovering from a fire??? uffta
make sure you have all grounds attached...& working. which you may already have spent time doing?

sputter after starup...hints of FPR(fuel pressure regulator) or maybe a erratic fuel pump relay switch.

not sure..
My thought is if you got parts /sensors from the XLT that is newer, ...after 1988...that there maybe compatability issues with the engine computer (EMC). Unless the EMC was swapped from the donor too. the no EGR after 88' thing

How is your brakes? vacuum booster leaking?

this sounds like what happened to me and my 86 bronco 2,
it would run like i pile of sh*t, black smoke, rough as hell etc.
i brought it to my shop and we started to go around the distributer and play with the TFI module harness, and it would die.
i replaced this module with a new one, so we thought maybe it was faulty, so we put the old one back on and it runs like a top now...

so i am thinking maybe you got a faulty TFI module(if you replaced it maybe)
other than that don't know...
