(LONG UPDATE ALERT)

Hi all, it's been awhile since I've been on here. Many of you have seen my old thread of my 84 ranger, and how I bought it, got it running, sold it, and bought it back from the same kid, with the trans installed. Well after I bought it, I put new tires on it, got it inspected, put H4 conversion headlights and clear turn signals in the front, blacked out the tails, and drove it as my daily driver for almost 2 months, But alas I shut it off one night, came out the next morning and started it up, and every lifter was clattering, the oil pressure gauge read Zero. So while plans to tear out the motor and fix it were being made, I bought a 93 Ford Tempo 2-door 3.0 5-speed low mileage to drive in the meantime. Fast-forward to this past weekend, me and my dad yanked the motor, expecting to see a shredded gear-oil pump or broken disty shaft, but nothing, everything is clear, no blockages in the pickup tube or the block we took apart the cover on the oil pump and the gears are fine, we are stumped. My dad wants to take a chance and just replace the oil pump, so that might be what we will do. But here's the video of yanking the motor, my younger brother is filming and me and my dad are the ones yanking the motor.

And a pic or two of the truck for good measure :)

Was the oil pump driveshaft properly seated into the dizzy?

I think there is a spec for that clip to hold it up high enough for the distributor to get a hold of it.

yes the shaft was seated properly, and the little clip that keeps it from falling in is still on it

It might not be at the right place on the shaft though.

Yes this is true.. I once installed my oil pump shaft incorrectly... it fit OK but I knew something wasnt quite right about how much travel it had....it probably would have worked for a bit but luckily I noticed my stupidity and corrected it. These shafts also twist pretty easily too. Might also check the pickup screen for clogs etc... i've seen people use gobs of rtv between the oil pump and block and oil pump and pickup... that could possibly clog it...

I am going to bet that its one of the three oil plugs behind the timing chain cam sprocket. I have seen them pop out before and then the lifters will clatter and show no oil pressure. Pull the timing cover and timing chain cam gear and look for the three plugs. One is behind the cam plate another one is above the cam and just off to the left and the other one is behind the distributor shaft. The one behind the dist is the one that I am guessing that came out. Good luck and let us know what you find.....

ok were going to have to pull the timing chain cover and check that out, thanks for the info

i usually thread the plugs and use a sealer on them.....was it a cold morning? i see that happen allot in the cold with hivol pumps....pop the push plugs pretty easy when its 10 deg out.

and...

dude.....the 20 minutes it takes to pull my clip off is sooooooo worth it.

3 hours to swap an engine is easy to do. by myself....

Good luck, I still like your truck alot :D

Frankly, I would of mentioned the oil pump stuff too...Frankly, I'm probably about as stumped as you are.

yea this isn't the first motor me and my dad have had apart together because of no oil pressure, but this is the first one that we found no obvious signs, like shredded oil pump gears, or snapped oil pump driveshaft.....only think left is those 3 plugs behind the timing cover I guess, there's no blockages anywere else on the motor or the pickup tube

40's is cool enough to pop em if they are on edge...

tapping and threading em is cheap security when rebuilding, but you need a gooooood shop vac and proper fittings to attempt it on assembled engine, along with some insanity. pack the ports with grease and mag / vac em out, run the pump manual with a drill for ahwile and monitor.

best to beat new pushers in though.
