My credo
I need more sleep.
So, I'm looking for an 4x4 vehicle, such as a jeep or a truck, preferably manual. It's going to be purely for offroad so it can be old or beat up. I think around $2500 for one would be in my price range. I've been looking around on craigslist and I haven't quite seen anything, maybe I'm just too low. But, if anyone has any good suggestions on what vehicles there are and where to look for good deals, I'm all for it. And something that isn't going to cost more in the repairs than the actual vehicle.

Depending on where you live, the "offroad" vehicle market is pretty slim because by the time you start looking all the cheaper vehicles are long gone, plus during hunting season where I live forget about looking because they are all priced through the roof because people know that hunters will pay higher prices to get a hunting rig.

I've been thinking off and on about selling my 84 Bronco 2 that I picked up last November, but I don't know due to the body issues it has I just don't really know what to price it at. Then I think well its great for the hills because its already beat up I don't have to worry about damaging the body or paint LOL. Then again it pieces and parts me to death it seems like every couple weeks I've having to work on it, but then once its fixed its like well I like it too much to sell it LOL.

Here's pics of my Bronco 2 so you can get an idea of my issues, but still completely drive-able other than needs tires very soon.

Around my area $2500 will get you a decent 93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee, some may even have a small lift and decent tires.
Heres an example:

I don't know how the market is in your area, but you may want to consider a vehicle like that. I think a wrangler is going to hold its value pretty well anywhere.

grand cherokee's can be nice to...

granted... it's got more than 2500 into it... but you gotta start somewhere.

Lol wow that is awesome.

Definitely. I've ran out of duct tape, several cans of WD-40, and the previous owner must have had a great supply of bailing wire because that's the exhaust hangers right now LOL, can't wait for those to burn through and drag the exhaust system right off the B2, great excuse to get it in the shop sooner for a replacement system, oh and save me about $50 for removing it myself according to the muffler shop LOL.

That is exactly what was holding up the muffler on my old 88 F-150. Lol and it was holding sheet metal on the exhaust to cover the holes.

I had a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, 4x4, 4.0L Straight 6, 4 speed auto tranny. Being full time 4WD, I was amazed where it went bone stock. The thing was covered in mud more than it was clean. 232,000+ miles on it and no major problems, other than normal services.

Loved my Jeep, wish I wouldn't have sold it. My only complaint later on after having this grand cherokee for a while was wishing I would have got one with the Selec-Trac 4WD system rather than full time 4WD. Selec-Trac 4WD if you don't know is both part time and full time 4WD with neutral and low range in one unit, the best 4WD transfer case ever used in a jeep. Where I live you can find jeep cherokee's and grand cherokees pretty reasonable. Jeep Wranglers on the other hand are easy to find but cost an arm and a leg.

My wife's grand Cherokee has the transfer case you where talking about. Its a nice feature but i find part time useless.
Her jeep is rounding 170k and it just has a small lifter tick . Minor details

You just have to keep looking is all, there are deals to be had out there.

The 2-door Explorer Sports ('91-'94) are some excellent platforms to build into wheelers, and can often be had well within the price bracket you mention.
Rangers of those years too. Plus you get a frame and a fixed-yoke t-case too, neither of which the Cherokee has. :)

Yep, what junkie said. The deals are out there, you just have to be patient. I bought the ranger I am building for $100 (trans was shot and needed a fuel pump, but I'm dropping a 5.0 in it anyways) and I bought my b2 from another member for $600, needed some adjustments very little money put into it and I've been DDing it for the last 6 months. It still needs some repairs, but nothing that can't wait til warmer weather.

Also, sometimes the best deals aren't being advertised. If you see a vehicle that you might be interested in or one that looks like it has been sitting awhile, don't be afraid to go knock on a door and ask about it. The worse that could happen is they say no, and you aren't any worse off than you are now. Or... you might buy yourself a rig on the cheap that hopefully doesn't take too much to get running well.
