I am buying a sub that is rated at 300 watt rms what is a good rms rating for an amp to power it. Can it be lower and still power it good and if it can be lower how much lower. and if i get a higher will it hurt it.

under powering will cause distortion, due to you cranking it up to have it try and keep up. over powering you can get clipping and over heating. the to much or to lil is proportional really. on the less side, half or 200rmsw ( what ever is less). over kill wouldnt go more the 200rmsw on any sub.

ideally you want 300wrms. If you know what youre doing you should be fine with less, but understand you wont get maximum performance. Most speakers can handle more power also as long as you know what you are doing too and dont try to crank it way up. If you are buying an amp look for one as close to the recommended power as possible
