how do i tell what alternator i have? mine went out and id like to switch to the 130 amp off the explorers and it was a ranger option as well. i figure since i have the top of the line ranger from 2001 it might already be a 130

I would take it to the parts house and get a 130 amp one out and compare them right there on the counter. If they both have the same connections you have a match.

Rangers got a 95 amp alternator from the factory...the 130 amp should be a bolt-in affair. I know it is for the OHV engine.

what vehicle does the 130 amp one come from soi dont have to argue with them about how it "wont fit your Ranger sir"

explorer of the same year...have them pull both and double check everything.
