Alternator

I have a 1986 ranger 4x4 2.9l and on my alternator there is a connecter with a little clip.Well the part that is on the alternator broke so now my battery will not charge can i buy this or do i have to buy a new alternator.I seen where i can buy a voltage regulator is that what this is?

You have the internal regulator yes it will ,probably need to be replaced.
