i have a 1988 ranger 2.9l that i just finished installing a clutch, when i bought her, it had a new alternator..i bought a new battery, installed it. but i could only drive for 2 days because the battery was not charging from the alternator. there is also a plow hookup on it, does anyone have any suggestions to find the problem (i.e. faulty wiring) quickly. or any stupid problems that the 88 had with this. Any help would be great thanks

go to your nearest auto-zone, etc. and have them test the alternator and battery. unless your going to plow with it, best to just get all that wiring out of there. also double check all the wiring (including the grounds) from the alternator to the battery, starter, etc.
good luck with this for sure.

and, Welcome to TRS.

If you have the alternator that has a 3 wire connector with 2 black with orange stripe wires and 1 white and black stripe wire, the connector may be bad.
There was a factory recall for the connector (the connector would catch fire) check to see if the 3 wire connector was replaced.here is a picture of the connector http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd151/contact794/ALT/MVC-894F.jpg
FYI the alternator does not charge the battery it just maintains the battery's charge, so if your battery has only 11 volts then the alt will only maintain 11 volts.

what are the 3 wire connector with 2 black with orange stripe wires and 1 white and black stripe wire for the alternator? im try to hook up mine with no cables, i have to strip them and manually find the cable wire types i only got two of the six wire connected. please help
