I was reading some post about winchs and car batteries and i read a comment on a second alternator being installed... Has any one done this with a 2.8? I was thinking of placing it where the air pump went since the bottom braket of the pump will fit an alterntor as well. My one worry is i dont believe there will be enough belt contacting the pully for it to be effective... Yalls thoughts...

Not sure if it would work or not, don't see why it wouldn't with a bit of knowledge and tinkering. May need a different size belt or the stock smog pump belt may work. I don't have the pump bracket or I would try it myself in my B2.

i may have to try to mock up my old 60 and see if it would fit.

What would be the advantage of adding another alternator? I would think just upgrading to a high output alternator and adding some relays for running high amp draw appliances would be a better alternative. Just run the addons directly from the battery those military style battery clamps make that real easy.

I alread have a 140 amp alt, and i was just wondering what i could do with my old 60. And i thought of this.

The high amp alternators are kind of pricey. You can get dual standard output alternators for a fraction of the cost of a high amp alternator. Not to mention the likelyhood of a dual alternator setup having both alternators fail at the same time is very slim, so that's kind of a failsafe, if one alternator fails, you at least have the 2nd alternator to get you to your destination.

Also...
Most high amp alternators make less power at idle then a stock alt. That would be a big benefit when sitting at idle trying to winch yourself out of a jam.

Yeah, they seem to be RPM based for max power output. Dang wish I had an air pump bracket I have a spare alternator and wouldn't mind trying it. Guess I should make a trip to the salvage yard just for a bracket, expensive trip though cuz I'd have to drive my truck not the B2 due to the continuing alignment issue.

I think have both the bracket and alt. in my garage, i just havent gotten around to test fitting them, i also dont have my b2 to mock it up in right now either. Ill post pics of the alt and the bracket to see how well they fit tomorrow.
