My 99 ranger super 2.5L finally took a dump on me this weekend at 205k miles. Leaving my driveway i heard a bit of grinding shifting to 2nd and lost everything. I can easily shift to every gear position but im not going anywhere. I had a trans. mechanic test drive it 2 weeks ago because it had been grinding occasionally taking off and he said it was fine. i was thinking clutch but he told me it was holding just fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. need more info just ask.

its gotta come out whether its the clutch or trans so id start there and see whats going on but sounds like clutch or input shaft to me just my thoughts though

If the clutch is holding just fine, may want to check the driveshaft, with the truck in gear and not running, you should not be able to twist it:icon_thumby:

Just another thing to quickly check

so i dropped the tranny... the clutch was shot, throwout bearing done, replaced the slave cylinder while i was in there. Solved the problem, but at the same time created another one. Now the clutch wont disengage. I used the "Tech Library" (TheRangerStation.com) as a guide to bleed the clutch. i bled and bled and bled, not a damn bubble one came out after the second time and it still wont fully disengage. Any help... hit me, im all ears

When bleeding a clutch, gravity is your friend. The best way i've found is to open the bleeder at the tranny, get out from under the truck and just keep the resivoir full. after you've gone through about 2 full resivors (never let it run dry!) hurry back under the truck and close the bleeder valve. this has worked like a charm for me. BTW while you did all this, did you change the pilot bearing? if not and bleeding dosen't help i'd try changing that.

I just ran into this with my Dad's'03 Cobra, it had the symptoms of a bad clutch and even smelled like burnt clutch when trying to drive it. We ended up Changing a $500 Spec clutch and Flywheel, put it back together. Still no movement and the same smell. We dropped the trans 3 times trying to figure out what was up. Turns out the the aftermarket Carbon fiber drives shaft broke, the yokes are pretty much glued into the carbon fiber tube, well one of them came unglued and the burnt clutch smell was really burning carbon fiber from the yoke spinning inside the tube. Live and learn.

had that problem on an ex's parents truck, turned out it was the pilot bearing

thanks for all the input guys... changed the pilot bearing also, good call though. it may have slipped off the shaft during reintall so i'll check.

I'd pull out the master, invert it, and bleed again.

I think i may have it.... my assistant (girfriend) was so eager to pull the pressure plate housing and clutch plate after we dropped the tranny that i forgot all about removing the pilot bearing. now im guessing i have two when i should only have one. DUMBASS ME!! "pull it back out"
