Aligning installed cam position that was loose?

This evening I was poking around my cam position synchronizer/CPS and discovered it was loose enough to change position (rotate). I will presume this is what cause the P0304 code and the occasional/random "jerk" while driving.

Any clues on how to best re-align it since I don't have a reference point I can trust?

Thanks.

follow-up to loose CPS/Cam Pos Synch

It would appear that the actual position of the sensor plug is not relative to the correct operation of the sensor as long as it was installed correctly. Although mine was loose, it wasn't loose enough to leave the housing therefore, just tightening the bold should do.

That makes me wonder if being loose may have caused some damage which should warrant replacing the Cam Position Synch housing and CPS just because.

Just because I have at least another 600 miles to pull from Las Vegas to N. CA and I'd like to get there safely, motor in the same fine form it is today.

Any experiences would be appreciated.

I doubt it caused any damage. I also doubt that a loose CPS is the cause of a cylinder 4 misfire.

The engine can run and not be damaged if the CPS signal becomes erratic. The bigger concern with a loose synchro is loss of oil pressure because it is what transfers power from the cam to the oil pump. It is usually kind of hard to not know when the engine has lost that kind of oil pressure.

What he said^^^^^^^

is the sensor on top of the syncro loose or is the syncro loose? If the syncro is loose and the bolt is tight I would stop driving and replace it. When the syncro fails the engine blows up in about 10 seconds. Buy a Motorcraft, they are $93
