wanted to share my confusion with these filters. wanted to change the fluid &filter on my 94 2wd.cuz of slight shift problem that actually turned out to be the 2 servos on the right side. went to a chain store and got what i needed, or so i thought.guy says they offer 2 filters but couldnt tell me why(my first ranger and didnt know either)later learned bout the 2and 4wd difference. all went great except for the previously 4 stripped pan bolts(not by me) untill i went to replace the pan & it woudnt go. i noticed the new filter ports were round and protruded about 5/16 of an inch. the filter i took out had rectangle ports and flush with the rest of the filter. all i could do at this point on a sun. eve was tin snip out the raised part & and install it.few weeks later i decided to tapout the bolts and get to the bottom of the filter prob. turns out the trans was swapped out with an 86 AL4D. Even on this site i never noticed any reference to differences in AL4D"s. if there is can someone point it out. if not, updates could save others a lotta time & frustration!!!!

There are 2 a4lds 1-solenoid [2 wires]('86 to '89 or '90)and 2-solenoid[3wires]('91 to '95) wires are by the shift cable mounting.

the a4ld, 4r44e, 4r55e, 5r44e, 5r55e all use the same filter.

there are 4 diffrent filters: screen type, felt type, 2wd, 4wd.

I always recc. using the screen type, better flow = less strain on the pump = cooler temps.

P.S. be shure to put on the O rings...

a4ld filters

thanks for your info...the only difference i saw in the tech pages on this trans were upgrades with electronics, reliability of componets, ect.in the years u mentioned. there was no mention of the different design of the filters for the reasons i mentioned in the prev.post...something on the tech page should note these changes and how to identify them. although your trans is infact an a4ld which you identified by the photos on the site or by your VIN. be sure to accurately date your trans if your not sure if its original to avoid major headaches when doing something a simple as changing the filter
