AJ I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 4.0 that has ticking noises sounds like it's coming from the bottom of the engine not sure what to do.

Do you have 4.0L SOHC or is it an OHV 4.0L?

If it's a SOHC... you may have timing chain guide and tensioner issues. Caution... if this is the case... having it let loose will destroy the engine. I've noticed this on a couple... seems it will always do it on a cold start. Doesn't last long... kinda sounds like a drum roll for about a second or two.

Anytime I hear what I believe is engine noise... I check oil pressure... with a mechanics gauge. Ticking noises are typically associated with the upper end. Knocking comes from the lower end.

On a cold engine... if you take the fan belt off and run the engine without the accessories and fan fan making noise... it may help you isolate the origins.
