Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum. I've seen this issue discussed many times and I hate to bring up old topics but I'm still having issues...

I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 4.0 XLT and the air is only coming through the defroster. And for a while it would just put out hot air once the engine got up to temp. So I changed the blend door actuator but that didn't do anything to help.

As time passed it seemed like it wouldn't even blow hot air through the defroster, just lukewarm air. Then if I would hit a bump on the road I would hear something inside the dash make a slight "thump" noise then the hot air would come through.

The truck has air conditioning but would never blow cold air. So I put some R134-A in it... now it blows ice cold air when on A/C mode but when not in A/C mode just luke warm/normal air... no hot air at all and again... all through the defroster.

I've heard of the vacuum ball issue that is in the passenger side fender well so I went in to look at that (I didn't take a picture... don't know why) but mine is not a round ball but it looks just like this one:

There are no visible cracks in it. When I take the hoses out the one on the right side has suction but the one on the left does not. I took it off and shake it and it does sound like there is some debris or something in it.

I guess my question is this: Is this canister thing my problem and if so do I need to get another canister looking one or will on of the round ball ones work?

Sorry for the long message but wanted to try and be as detailed as I could be.

Thanks for any help!

You most likely have a vacuum problem. In many vehicles a loss of vacuum will cause the blend doors to go to defrost.

Yup, problem somewhere in the vacuum system. My experience has been that it is very rare for the canister to be the issue with no visible damage. Start checking lines.

Back in the days of old, before vacuum cans they all went to defrost under heavy load. So, another yep for vacuum leak..
