Air deflector thingy?

Well, We got a good amount of snow here in North West Indiana this past weekend. At my school there was a pile of snow that was asking to be driven through. Well after a quick look in my rear view mirror i seen this black plastic thingy laying on the ground. It came from upfront, not sure where it went. What is it for? Is it necessary?

It goes underneath the bottom of the radiator.

that goes right under the radiator.
seems to be there to direct air to the rad and protect it from rocks or stuff like that
my brother's truck doesnt have it, mine had it, but i removed it to install the brushguard and forgot to put it back in, i havent had any issues without it,
