I have a 1994 Ranger with 170K miles on itand the 2.3 with an after market intake and with just a glass pack. I bought it 4 years ago and 6 months after i bought it it started completely killing the secondary coil and I would turn the key off and back on and it would start driving normally. A new ICM and it fixed the problem for a few months and it started again but on rare occasions so I just ignored it. I was in the process of changing the timing belt and found it could the be the crank position sensor so I replaced it as well. It still killed the secondary coil on occasion after. This past year it has started back up with a vengeance. It has begun killing the secondary coil and/or completely shutting the ignition off but still runs the fuel pump and injectors, turn the key off and back on and it runs just fine but lead to completely clogging or melting two catalytic converters in a year. I have replaced the ECU as recommended by a friend who has dealt with a similar problem. The past two weeks this has progressed into an everyday thing. Till one day it shut off this past week and backfire all the honeycomb of the catalytic converter out driving down the road causing brush fire. I took it into a shop and they told me its throwing ignition codes and its most likely the ICM again but I forgot the specific codes. After replacing my cat AGAIN, the ICM (still under warranty), and replaced the fuel filter (never buy a Fram, the element came loose) I took it out for a test drive and it cut off a time or two hard on hills but then started back on its own that I believe it was just an air pocket in the fuel filter going through the system. I also noticed a bit more steam and water coming out of the tail pipe and just blew it off as the Catalytic converter actually working as im not losing coolant and it dint have the horrible blown head gasket smell. Today I went for a drive and it just shut off and when I got it started back up it back fired and a huge black cloud followed behind me. I need ideas of what this could be as I am a bit short on cash and cant have it taken back into a shop to have it looked at.
