I have a 1999 ford ranger xlt extended cab with a flareside bed and its 2wd. I want to do some off roading, mudding ect. The advice I need is, do i lift the current ranger I have and do my off road mods to this or sell it and get a 4x4 ranger? I dont know what to do. Let me know what you think and if you own a 2wd ranger and off road with it let me know how it is. Thanx

I would either look for an older one, something 97 or older and wheel that and keep the 99 as a DD, or SAS the 99 and wheel that. Just my $.02.

what is it you want to do exactly? what kind of off roading?

If you're gonna off road, I'd have two trucks. One for DD duty and one for play. That way if you break something on the play truck, you still have a ride to work or school come Monday. If you decide to go that route, 97 and older are easier on the pocket to modify.

It really depends on what your doing with it and how serious the offroading is. Ive done plenty of trails with my 2wd here in colorado but if your looking to do something serious then id suggest an older 4x4.

What is your opinion on lockers? Is it worth the extra $200 for the powertrax traction system or just get the powerstrax lock right?

Mudding is not a great idea for a 2wd, Bro. You WILL get stuck in some deep mud and it will not be much fun...lol. Just trail riding and some nice country rides in the woods is what I do with my 2wd Ranger. You can get a nice lift kit for a good price if you shop around.

Yea thats what i want to do, trails and things like that but is it wiser to put the money for a lift and tires for a 2wd or 4x4? Right now i am going towards the 4x4 not only because of offroading but because of the winters where i am in NY.

Just put it towards an older 4wd.

It will help a 2wd tremendously, but in my experiance it is hard to push the front tires (which ironically carry most of the trucks weight) when they don't turn... throw in low traction conditions and you could be in trouble.
