Advice for more bottom end.

I tried porting my head and not sure if I took enough out but I think it's a bit more spunky than the original head that wasn't ported...but I did have a mild racing cam at one point and ended up tossing it when I got the roller cam head...not sure if it would have worked with this head, but it made a bit of difference that was noticeable in the old head...

Porting I did with a grinder set and was able to reach all the way back into the chamber and then got the rest from the inside with the valves removed...but mine is carbed and I can't remember if I was advised that the porting may hurt performance with a carb or vice versa...

The heads are all the same (minus '95 and up with the smaller valve stems and bigger valves I believe) as far as flat tappet and roller, the difference is in the cam and followers

Porting helps all, the more air you can get in the better, with a speed density (mid '90 and older 2.3's minus turbo engines, only having rpm and manifold air pressure) they can't take the extra air flow into account very well unless they are in closed loop (oxygen sensor) where the air mass system (mass airflow sensor and rpm) knows how much air is going in and in closed loop can account for things a little better

Gains

Any speculation on what the gains may be from porting? Or better yet, any documented gains? I was wondering if the computer would be able to compensate with the new set of conditions and whether tuning would allow you to retrain the computer to take advantage of the new stage.

Thanks,

Kevin

I haven't done it myself, but it would most likely be the best improvement you could get, probably 5% power increase. Someone else might chime in with a more accurate estimate but it could be bigger...

With a mass airflow system and an oxygen sensor the engine will learn how much extra fuel to add for the extra air
