advice for first time gear install

whatever you do, dont cut the blue wire.

so, ive decided to buy new gears since it would probably be hard to come across a good used set of 5.13s so i was wondering if anyone could tell me what brand of gears i should buy. are richmond gears much better than motive? will i be getting what i pay for?

I've done a couple of Motive sets now (in my truck and others) and have not had any issues with them yet. Set up has never been a problem with them.

ive run richmond, motive and yukon and never noticed a difference between any of them.

also the "pinion depth tool" is your digital caliper, which also is used to measure your shim packs.

thanks for the info, whats the method for using the digital caliper for pin ion depth?

also can anyone tell me, if i can just pull the center chunk out of the 9 inch or do i have to pull the axleshafts out and pull the axle apart?

you have to take the 4nuts off the retaining plate, then pull the shafts out a little bit, then you can pull the 3rd. Also the way you use the digital caliper to measure is when you slide the caliper open it has a little "pin" that slides down, you PUt that on the face of the pinion and measure to the centerline of the diff. Distance will be displayed on the digital display.

oh, thanks, now theres one less tool i need to buy.
how about bearing pullers? where should i look for those? i saw some on ebay not sure if there good quality though.

also, i was wondering if i could buy a bare open carier for 3.92 and numerically higher and put my old internals from my old carrier in it?

really you need a bearing splitter. You can get those just about anywhere, I wouldnt worry too much about quality, they are hard to break. and yes internals will swap between carriers.

by the way, i just noticed you didnt specify what carrier you were buying. there is no carrier spit for the 9", any ratio fits on it. But as for a Dana axle, yes you can just swap internals from one case to another.
