My uncle just bought a new truck and it came with a system already in it. The sub from his old truck was blown but he gave me two high quality 6x9 speakers for free. I have a 03 ranger single cab that has front and rear stock speakers and stock head. The 6x9s were already in boxes from when they were in his single cab truck. I heard that the there' may be an extra channel on the stock head? I'm pretty mechanically inclined but i'm new to sound systems, would I be better off to just change out speakers, splice those two in some where or use the extra channel? (if there is one)
Thanks in advance,
Don

most HU "Head Units" have only 4 channels, they should fit where your door speakers are, it wont be any louder just cleaner in sound quality

6X9's won't fit without cutting... if that

True most modern fords accept only 5x7 and 6x8, and smaller ones in the dash.

Your Truck should have 4 speakers, pick a pair and swap them out for the 6x9 if your ok with trimming to make them fit. Just check for clearances in depth before you begin cutting

To fit a 6x9 it does takes cutting. but honestly not much. And is an easy up grade. And my two cents. We'll worth it as far as availability

Not worth the modifications. Just get good 6X8's and amp them

If you have a regular cab, the use of front and rear speakers is really useless from an audio standpoint. The rear speakers are blowing into the seat.

The best upgrade you can do is to GET RID of the 5x7 or similar speakers. Get a 5x7 to 5" adaptor and put some quality speakers with appropriate crossover, and a quality amplifier to power them.

Ford makes some good quality speakers that are bolt in. I got a set from a MACH system out of a Mustang in the front. I have a set from a Lincoln in the rear of my extended cab. Both sets had a factory "box" enclosing the rear of the speaker.

I'm all in agreement with most of that. Why would you drop cone size. Now a days your digital cross over build in to head units can out tune your speakers any day. Not to mention. And thank your for in plying amp'ing your highs, not just your lows like some yo boy. But your 4321 Channels have crossovers on them too (most). But shrinking your cone size. Is going to kill your mid sounds. And it's a pain int the neck to get them really to shine through as it is.

It not really about dropping cone size in this case as much as increasing accuracy, a round speaker will have less flex than any oval speaker, and in the debate square speaker normally have rigid fins glued to the surface to increase rigidness

Then why a 5" and not a standard 6½"?

You could do either.. I would do 6.5 or custom in some 8.00s
