Ford being who they are neglected to put a tach into a manual truck, while I really dont need one, it would be a nice thing to have.

How hard is it to put a cluster with a tach in my 92 Ranger?

What do I have to add or modify to get it to work? My thinking is some type of rpm reading device, be sides that would it be a direct fit in?, even with the gauges being in different places

It's so simple it's not even funny. Splice the green wire on your tach into the ground side of the coil, the black wire will be ground, red will be switched power or light<white wire (I usually just twist these 2 together and tie into a switched power source). Easy peasy...

if you find one that has a tach in it it is plug and play no mods needed just find an explorer cluster and it plugs right up. the removal of the old one is a bitch though especially if you have big hands. you can even swithch the plate on a cluster for an automatic with the plate on your stantard to remove the gear selector indicator.

i swapped clusters on my truck and the one i nstalled had 20,000 miles on it so i didnt care about mileage.

:icon_confused:WHAT?

you can swap to an instrument cluster with a tach with no other modifications... it doesn't matter what engine the cluster comes from.

'92's are a little trickier than older ones because they changed the cluster part way into the year. Find your build date from your vin number if it's early in the year get one from a '89-91 ranger and if it's later in the year get one from a late '92 to '94 ranger or explorer

it's as easy as taking the trim cover thing that goes around the radio and everything (the only fasteners are the two for the ashtray, the rest are spring clips, just pull gently in several spots until it comes off, you'll see where the clips are). then take out the screws that hold in the cluster and reach behind it and unclip the two wiring connectors that go to the back, and reach behind and unhook the speedo cable, if you do a search you will come up with a picture or two on how to unhook it (it's kinda a pain), pull the clear screen from the old cluster, pry out the outer gage chunks then lift out the speedo and swap that into the new cluster and reassemble, that is the cleanest install

What's early or what's late 1992?

All right Im definitly gonna pick up a cluster with a tach next jy run

I can't remember if it was february or june, which is why I didn't say a time :)

if you really want to know, pull the cluster out enough to see the little printed circuit thing on the back, there will be a part number, if it's the older wiring style it will start with E8 or E9, if it's the newer wiring it'll start with F2, you can identify them by color but the with and without tach are different colors themselves so there's probably 4 different colors out there and I don't remember what color mine is anymore
