I have been meaning to do my tail gate light bar for a while now, but with temperatures being cold and me not having a place to do it, i decided to do something differently. I really like audi from lights, so i bought a pair of strip LED's for 15$/pair, shipped. Was easy to hook up, spliced the positive wire to the positive wire on one of the parking lights, and the ground to the ground on it. Turns on with the parking lights. It's hard to take pictures of them at night..but this is what they look like just on by themselves :

I have since straightened it up a bit since the picture was taken. Right before all this ice..

Be careful... those look awfully blue to me...

They're not..they're bright white. Camera adds to the hue :(

Does anyone know the legality of tail lights? I want to do something different for my tail lights, because i do not like anything that is on the market right now. My plan is this :

I want to add two of these, on each side of my tail gate :

(The running tail lights/break lights) : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/AUDI...rQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories#ht_2588wt_939

(The reverse lights ) :http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2x-a...ccessories&hash=item2560890166#ht_2980wt_1165

(The turn signals ) : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2X-A...Accessories&hash=item1c18153f8d#ht_3253wt_939

The lights would be added on the tail gate itself, and the other lights would not be working..is that legal, or no? (I am in Ohio)

Seems kinda pointless to me... why not create a metal filler where the current tail lights go, and then make space for rigid light bars to fit?

The strips are flat, so they would be a perfect solution to what i want to do.

I want something different to do to my truck, and i think this is what i want to do. I just want to know the legality of it.

Well... I'm willing to bet that the lights have to be DOT approved, so look for that on the website. You may not get caught right away... but if you get in a wreck and someone rear ends you, and they're looking for a good way to get out of it, they could get you in trouble with lights that aren't DOT approved.

If I recall correctly, the lights have to be DOT approved, but you're allowed other lights in addition to the regular taillights.

How would i go about getting lights DOT approved? Is it worth it?

you personally cannot get lights DOT approved. Only the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) can get automotive lights DOT Approved.

Yep... you need to find lights that are already dot approved. Try www.superbrightleds.com they MIGHT have some bars that are DOT approved. Personally, I wouldn't use amber turn signals... I think they look ugly, but YMMV, I would just use another red strip...
