acts like its running out of fuel

it started as a random thing then got worse. it started out doing it once or twice a week then got to the point it would do it every day on the way home. it got to the point that it started to do it on the way to work even. i was almost to the point of pulling the 2.9 out and swaping in a small block. when i pumped the gas out i ran it through a filter and did the same putting it back in. truck has run great for a week now.

i replaced my fuel filter and it looked horendous but i can't imagine that being my issue. first off this wasn't the first time i went wheelin so if it was crap at the bottom of my tank then it would have been stirred up long before this. second it doesn't do it constantly and it usually only does it for about 10 minutes or so only sometimes does it run like that all the way home from work or wherever. sometimes i can jump in it and it will run bad and as soon as i get ready to take off it will run perfectly fine... i'm so confused about this one i really have no clue where to start:icon_confused:

that sounds more like a loose electrical connection somewhere to me. those can be a bear to track down and repair.

take a look at all your PCM grounds. leave your O2 sensor plugged in, unplugging it isnt going to accomplish anything. maybe next time its running rough, you can tryi doing a KOER test to see what comes up. you might also try unplugging spark plug wires one at a time so we can at least narrow down the trouble cylinder(s).

don't know if this is your situation...but...how secure is your battery??
mine was on a piece of wood and bungeed down, pretty snug...but still could slide some side to side. I didn't precieve that it could slide to the fender...but when I put ends on the piece of wood it sat on, to keep it more stationary, then the incosistant running issues {so far}, have cleared completely. Just note if your battery + positive post is on the fender side.

Just thinking out loud, hope it helps

Heh...the battery in my B2 sat pretty snug in the tray but wasn't tied down, and since I don't get off road in it much, didn't think it was too important. Got rear-ended, and the battery slid back into the fan of the alternator which carved a big round hole in the back of the battery spraying acid all over the front of the motor and down over the frame. What a mess. Always a good idea to make that battery IMMOBILE....

i knew a guy once that did a ground-up restoration of a '68 bronco...and not one of the krylon restores...he put his heart and soul into that rig. EVERYTHING was new, sprayed, chromed, you name it. he was so excited to take it for its first test run once it started getting near completion that he completely spaced the battery hold down hardware. needless to say his brand new battery slid into his brand new flex fan while making a corner and hosed his spic-n-span engine bay down with brand new battery acid. he was...erm, "unhappy" with himself.

i didnt learn from his mistake...my blue escort battery is minus battery hold down equipment(not even a bungee). i consider it weight reduction :D

My Tempo didn't have any of it either, but there's so much crap surrounding it, there's really no where else for it to go.. :D

In my 86 Ranger I dropped the gas tank to check to see if the lift pump was working correctly. Even if it wasn't I don't think it would run as crappy as it does but I ran the lift pump from a different battery for a wile and drained the gas and put new gas in as well as some injector cleaner and it takes about two minutes of working the pedal and keeping it from dieing rather than 10 like before to get it to idle. I think its worth checking out. I would rather do that than spend a lot of money on replacing the fuel pump. That still doesn't make sense why my fuel pressure was at about 35 PSI instead of 40 but I haven't tested it since. The next step for me is checking the fuel pressure and possibly a new fuel pump.

it can cause an issue. thats what mine was . and my fp is still 35 psi
