AC pump repeatedly kicking in and out in certain modes

I finally got around to taking my Ranger to a shop to have the AC checked out. It was 1/2 lb. low on freon. It still had enough freon to keep it cool but low enough to cycle quickly. They found both the high and low pressure Schrader valves had slight leaks and replaced them. They also removed the freon, pulled vacuum then replaced the freon.

Next time I will try adding more freon before taking it in. That would save me $350. They did do a very thorough check of the AC system and now I know it has a clean bill of health.

I'm sure the $350 hurt the wallet but sometimes it's worth it to know they condition of the system. I'm just glad it wasn't qnything more than the schrader valves.

I agree with that. They also put a die in it to verify they did not miss any leaks that could show up later.

That dye will stay in it forever now, so that will help you out later on if you get another leak. I should say "when" you get another leak. A/C systems develop leaks over time.

Yes, they eventually leak. However, it is doing pretty good with almost 300K miles on it. It did get a condenser replacement at around 200K miles. I guess the many miles off-road fatigued it enough to create a crack.
